Out of Place salon, wed 24th of June, 20.00hrs
With Osama Dawod (Egypt) and Donna Akrey (Canada)

An evening where an Egyptian foreigner and a flaky Canadian tell about their work.

In his recent work - following a move to the US from Egypt - Osama Dawod has been preoccupied with that which is “out of place”: from the visual and the imaginary - to his position as a foreigner in a host(ile) environment. More information about Dawod: www.osamadawod.com

The work by Donna Akrey reflects her interest in the urban environment, language and communication, body and mind and the power of the habitual on our dreams and realities. Donna Akrey has a blog: mobiusstripmall.blogspot.com

Admission is free. The presentations are in English. The salon starts at 20.00. Doors open at 19.30.

Re:Parallax

Dates:
Wed Jun 03, 2009 00:00 - Tue Jun 02, 2009

Re:Parallax
Strike a pose and laugh!
3th to 28th of June 2009

No professional performers, but YOU as the center of attention in Re:Parallax. Become part of the re-enactment of the performance Parallax by Zhana Ivanova. Take your picture in a professionally lit photo set according to the artists directions. Every photo is one image, one frame in a growing online imagebank. Together these pictures form a stop-motion film, which will be shown in the exhibition space. Re:Parallax is part of the exhibition WatSpinoza?.

WatSpinoza? open until the 28th juni 2009. Wed - Fri from 12.00 to 20.00 and Sat + Sun 12.00 - 18.00. No admission.

With the project WatSpinoza? Mediamatic wants to advocate public discussion by publicly asking difficult and controversial questions. These questions are based on the thoughts and views of philosopher Spinoza. The questions appear in unexpected places throughout the city. Everyone can respond via sms, via the website www.watspinoza.nl and on dozens of chalkboards in the exhibition itself.

The End must go on

Dates:
Sat May 23, 2009 00:00 - Fri May 22, 2009

Location:

The End must go on
A performance by Joao Evangelista and Felix Kubin

Or how to survive midnight without becoming a pumpkin in 10 easy steps

Six persons perform their functions within a game system, shaped as a random generator of worst case scenarios. Within the duration of one hour, they attempt to achieve the most perfect representation of 'The End of ...' using the means available which prove to be inadequate, leading to constant misrepresentations.
The work presents an exhaustion of the imagination of disaster, so present in nowadays culture, and the demystification of The End as a delusional human construct.

Location
Mediamatic BANK, Vijzelstraat 68, Amsterdam

Start at 21.30 hrs. Admission 7.50 euro. Doors open at 21.00 hrs.

_____________

The End must go on is the closing of the street performance Sphynx says: follow the white rabbit, both part of Density +-0. This is a contribution to the art manifestation My Name is Spinoza by Violet Bureau. Density +-0 contains a series of performances and headphone concerts in the city of Amsterdam, and contemporary dance and sound performances at the SMART Project Space, Frascati and Mediamatic from May 16th to May 23rd 2009.

Workshop Generating VGA Signals

Dates:
Fri Jul 10, 2009 00:00 - Mon May 18, 2009

Location:
Netherlands

A hands-on workshop that introduces you to the world of VGA signals.

By using the very simple and cheap PIC Microchip micro-controller it's possible to generate certain signals. With these signals you can display all kinds of pixel patterns on any VGA monitor or beamer. During the workshop participants will create their own "VGA test box", that will make it possible for you to do the same.

How?
The micro-controller will be programmed using PIC assembly language, however, assembly coding skills are not required, as pre-programmed chips will be available, and participants can create their own image / logo for their test box. Participants do need some soldering skills.
The more adventurous participants can use the prepared micro-controller to hook it up to an Arduino or I2C chip, so that the VGA signal can be modified using a more powerful computer. (If you want to do this, please bring your own Arduino or I2C chip)!

About Arjan and this specific project
Arjan Scherpenisse is a part-time student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, graduating coming July with an installation consisting of 72 centrally-controlled VGA monitors, using self-built electronics. While his current passion lies in combining the virtual with the physical using electronics, his background is in software engineering and Open Source software. Currently he is employed by Mediamatic Lab, Amsterdam [1]. Together with Eelco Wagenaar [2] he has been part of Transmediale'09 in Berlin and ISEA2008 in Singapore, with the virtual/physical interactive game "PING" [3].

Sensitive Clothing

Dates:
Wed Jun 17, 2009 00:00 - Mon May 18, 2009

Location:
Netherlands

Wearable technology has been around for a while. What do we want to do with it?

In a series of workshops Mediamatic will explore "techno" -clothing. Clothing that lights up in the dark, clothing that sings when it is touched and clothing that moves when it is cold. Bring your own garment and add new input and output devices to it!

Trainer
Nadya Peek worked more than four years at Mediamatic. While working here she studied at the University of Amsterdam, majoring in artificial intelligence. Now she's a student at MIT Media Lab in Boston.

Touching
Here we want to look at capacitive sensing, heating up parts of the clothing with thin wire and buzzing parts of the clothing with small motors. What can we do when someone touches us or we touch them? And also, how do we use touchscreen mobile phones with gloves in the winter?

What to bring?
Please bring a garment you want to use (dress, coat, pants, underwear etc.). We have a little set of electronics for you here to play and experiment with.

When & where?
RSVP by clicking the 'make reservation for this activity' button on this page. A maximum of 14 participants per workshop can join. Times are from 13.00 - 17.00 hours. Location is Mediamatic Bank, Vijzelstraat 68, Amsterdam

Payment & more information
Workshop costs € 35. Please pay in cash upon arrival. Price includes the electronics kit.
If you have questions or need more information please contact workshop coordinator Deborah Meibergen at deborah [at] mediamatic.net or by phone: +31 (0) 20 638 9901
