Mediamatic Arduino Unplugged workshop
12 | 13 | 14 | March 2007
What?
Tiny chips, cheap sensors and the possibilities of emerging smart fabrics, conductive yarns and cheap wireless communication (bluetooth or even rfid) make wearables easier and cheaper to make. Arduino boards are small physical computing platforms: Arduino developed a fairly simple integrated development environment to deal with the small portable input/output board.
In this workshop we will have a look at wireless Arduino's (Bluetooth Arduino's).
Who?
Massimo Banzi a.k.a. Mr. Arduino, is one of the founders of Arduino. He currently teaches Physical Interaction Design at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea and is a consultant on interaction design projects that involve electronics and technology.
This workshop is intended for Computer scientists, hardware hackers, art students, fabric experts, product developers, nerds, dancers - everyone is welcome. However, note that some technical affinity is required. Some experience in programming and electronics will come in useful, specifically in soldering and java, but is not strictly necessary.
Registration:
You can register online: http://www.mediamatic.net/workshopregistration
The Arduino Unplugged workshop costs 125 euros. Dutch students receive a discount of 50 euros.

In 4 intense workshop days all participants make their own Machinima movies or game based projects.
The workshop provides you with the skills and knowledge you need to create your own Machinima, or to further improve your skills if you already tried your hand at it.
Who?
Participants will be guided through Machinima production process by Daniel van Gils (NL), Jonas Hielscher (G) and Ricard Gras (E/UK)
The coaches are experienced in a wide variety of game engines, and specialized in using the Unreal Tournament engine, the Sims 2 engine, the Machinima possibilities of Second Life and Machinimation, that runs in the Quake 3 engine.
This workshop is intended for filmmakers, animators and gamers. Some experience with playing video games or film editing is helpful, but not essential.

Mediamatic Pure Data workshop
Dates:
Sat Feb 03, 2007 00:00 - Thu Jan 11, 2007
Mediamatic Pure Data workshop - Making practical designs with PD
03 | 04 | February 2007
What?
PureData (or PD) is a fairly easy to learn graphical programming language for the creation of interactive computer music and multimedia works. This workshop is an opportunity for anyone to learn how to process and organize sounds, how to map and program for physical interaction, for video processing and and for networking possibilities with Pure Data. In PureData functions or objects are patched together in a graphical environment which models the flow of data. Participants will learn the basics of using PD, the basics of sound synthetization and they will build their own PureData sound- video or control patches. PureData is a free, open source software tool.
Who?
Andy J. Farnell a.k.a. Obiwannabe is a composer, open source software developer and computer scientist from the UK. Andy has produced many works for the BBC, film and game projects and worked with some well known bands as well.
Furthermore Kostya Leonenko, who studied sonology at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag, will assist participants making their projects.
This workshop is intended for nerds, musicians, artists, programmers and designers. We'll start from scratch, so programming skills will not be required, but will come in handy of course. Participants will need some technical affinity.

Any Media Documentary workshop
Dates:
Mon Nov 13, 2006 00:00 - Thu Nov 09, 2006
Workshop Any Media Documentary @ IDFA
Makers of creative documentaries need to come to terms with an explosion
of existing new media channels and practices, in terms of conceiving, producing as well as publishing documentary projects.
In this workshop we’ll look at the possibilities of new media from the point of view of a documentary author, and all participants develop a prototype of a many media documentary.
Starting from content ideas or from existing material, participants will develop a prototype documentary project that uses one or more new media.
Topics include: the mobile phone as production tool, the role(s) of the audience and Web 2.0 practices, interactive and databased stories, and the use of computer games for documentary purposes.
What media suit your content? What roles do you want your audience to have? What tools suit your concept? What new aesthetic questions do you need to answer?
What?
The workshop kicks-off with an afternoon seminar on best practices in crossmedia documentary projects. In the five following days, makers will develop prototypes of their own crossmedia documentary projects, tutored by experienced coaches and international guestlecturers that present their projects and react to the participants proposals.
Results will be shown and discussed at 30 november in De Balie from 11.00 hrs till 12.30 hrs.
Workshoptools
Next to the sly and easy-to-use Korsakow System, participants are introduced to a selection of current online tools to build their projects with. All participants are helped realizing their workshop projects by savvy technical assistants. Participants need no specific technical knowledge in advance.
For whom?
The workshop is designed for 16 makers, producers, editors and educators of documentary film, radio, television and video.
When? Where? How Much?
Openingsymposium: Friday 24 November 2006, 13.30 hrs - 16.30 hrs at De Balie, Kleine Gartmanplantsoen 10, Amsterdam.
Workshop sessions: Saturday 25 - Wednesday 29 November 2006, 10.00 - 16.30 at Mediamatic, Oosterdokskade 5, 5th floor, Amsterdam.
