Any Media Documentary Workshop @ IDFA
Dates:
Fri Nov 21, 2008 00:00 - Fri Oct 24, 2008
Location:
Netherlands
Mediamatic and IDFA organize a 5-day workshop to augment your documentary practice. Participants research which new media tools work for their content ideas, and how to incorporate them. We'll also look at new media as source material for documentarists. Online is a world of data that can reveal stories that cannot primarily be captured with the camera. A special focus in this workshop will be on using and visualizing new kinds of online data as a part of documentary practice. All participants will make a working prototype of their AnyMedia documentary project.
Starting from researched content ideas, participants develop a media format that involves one or more parallel new media channels. Included is the way in which different groups of users interact with the project at the intended moments of contact. For every participant, the workshop results in a working prototype.
Focus
In this workshop participants will research which new media tools work for their content ideas, and how to incorporate them. But we'll also look at new media as source material for documentarists. Online is a world of events, developments and data that can reveal stories that cannot primarily be captured with the camera. A special focus in this workshop will be on using and visualising new kinds of online data as a part of documentary practice.
How ?
The workshop will kick off with a symposium, organised by Mediamatic and IDFA, on the roles of mash-ups and data visualization in the documentary practice. Every following workshop morning will have lessons and lectures by guests that contribute to the IDFA festival as well as to the workshop. Every afternoon will be dedicated to conceptualising and producing a project prototype. All participants are assisted conceptually, technically and practically by lecturers, trainers, and assistants in realising their workshop project. The workshop concludes with a final presentation in which some of the results are presented and discussed in the context of the IDFA festival.
This workshop is part of IDFA's DOCLAB, that explores the border area's of new media and the documentary practice. DOCLAB's theme this year is the creative treatment of actuality using statistical data and new technological means.
Tools
Participants will be introduced to a selection of current online tools and services that together provide the essential range of Web2.0 functionality. Furthermore, participants are introduced to the sly and easy-to-use Korsakow System, that can be used as a tool to create databased online video projects, but also as a presentation device.
www.mediamatic.net will be used to document the development of the workshop projects.
Results
At the end of the course, participants:
- Have worked out what (new) media can be of use in their documentary project.
- Have gained insight in a range of digital media practices that are relevant from a documentarists' perspective.
- Have broadened their scope on ways to 'creatively treat actuality'.
- Investigated online centres of attention for their project.
- Have developed a prototype, including an interactivity model and the contact moments between the project and its audiences.

Designing Interactive Toys
Dates:
Mon Oct 20, 2008 00:00 - Wed Oct 01, 2008
Location:
Netherlands
Designing Interactive Toys
Go geeky: Build, hack, experiment, play and go wild!
Design Interactive Toys is led by a star team that includes Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino of Tinker (the company that brought the Arduino), part-time toy hacker Danja Vasiliev and physical computeer Dirk van Oosterbosch. Participants will intensely play with toys - using their hands, their concepts, and our soldering kits, sensors and experience.
Workshop approach
Participants learn about creative play and physical computing. They design new and exciting toys, and combine physical and digital qualities to make it happen.
In the mornings, lectures and lessons bring in new perspectives, and interesting project presentations. Every afternoon the participants work on their own workshop projects. In four workshop days every participant will develop a prototype of a hybrid world media project, assisted by outstanding international trainers, lecturers and technical assistants. The workshop closes with a public presentation in which the issues are discussed and the results are shown.
Trainers
Alexandra Deschamps - Sonsino from Tinker.it is present as one of the trainers and lecturers. We are very pleased with her presence. Next to Alexandra we also have the outstanding technical qualities of Dirk van Oosterbosch and Danja Vasiliev to support the workshop. Their knowledge and experience are also very much needed during this workshop.
Workshop tools
As practical research tools the participants can use a variety of Arduino's (Diecimila, Bluetooth and Lilypad) with a collection of sensors and other (conductive) materials to play and experiment with. Please bring your own toys to play, experiment and hack with.
Participants
The workshop is designed for a maximum of 16 media makers, artists, designers and producers. All participants are assisted personally in realizing their workshop projects. Participants are not required to have specific technical knowledge of physical computing and new media, but affinity is important and recommended.
Final results presented at the Cinekid Festival
The results of the workshop will be presented during the Cinekid Festival.
Price
The price for this workshop is: € 250 excl. VAT
The price includes technical support and the use of equipment.

Augmented Reality Games
Dates:
Mon Jun 02, 2008 00:00 - Fri May 02, 2008
In a timeframe of three-day participants conceptualize and construct a prototype of an Augmented Reality Game using the ARToolkit, assisted by outstanding international trainers. The focus of the gameplay design will be on the relation between the virtual and the physical. Game rules can be implemented through the software by programming; and they can be implemented physically, in the real world game space; and they can be implemented socially, by designing what is and isn't allowed when trying to reach the games' goals.
