Tue May 29, 2007 00:00 - Tue May 29, 2007
25 | 26 & 27 | 28 | 29 June
Making practical designs with Pure Data in a 5, 3 or 2-day workshop
Pure Data (or PD) is a visual programming language for the creation of interactive computer music, video and multimedia works. It has become a pioneering application in the contemporary art field.
This workshop is an opportunity for video makers, musicians, artists and designers to learn how to process and organize image, sounds and video and how to use the networking possibilities of Pure Data.
WORKSHOP APPROACH
During an introductary 2-day workshop (25 | 26 June) participants will learn the basics of using PD and of manipulating video, images and sound.
In the 2nd workshop (27 | 28 | 29 June) you will get more in-depth knowledge and work for 3 days on your own PureData sound or video project. It is a 5-day workshop, but depending on your experience and preferences it is possible only to follow the introductory workshop or only the in-depth workshop.
TRAINER
Koray Tahiroglu from Turkey / Finland, is a very experienced 'PD'er', connected to the Media Lab of the University of Art & Design in Helsinki. Koray gives PureData workshops all over Europe. Technical people will assist him and help participants through the design process.

Arduino and Arduino Bluetooth Workshop
Dates:
Fri Jun 01, 2007 00:00 - Tue May 22, 2007
11 | 12 | 13 | 14 | 15 June 2007
Mediamatic, Amsterdam
Arduino Basic & Bluetooth Workshop:
DIY wireless interactive networking for artists and designers
Arduino is an affordable computing platform which is particularly useful for designers and artists who want to build physical interactive projects. Arduino takes input from a variety of switches or sensors, and can control a variety of lights, motors, and other outputs. In this workshop you will learn how to work with the basic usb Arduino and with the wireless Bluetooth Arduino.
WORKSHOP APPROACH
We offer a 5-day workshop. Depending on your experience you can also register only for the first two, or only for the last three days.
We start with a 2-day introduction to Arduino (11 | 12 June), for those who haven't worked with Arduino's before. We will work on the basic USB Arduino, the lay-out of the board, how to connect hardware and some basic programming skills.
In the following days (13 | 14 | 15 June) we will deal with more advanced versions and uses, including Bluetooth Arduino's and the programming possibilities with Pure Data. In these three days you will work on your own small prototype of a wireless Arduino application.
TARGET GROUP
Art students, product designers, computer scientists, hardware hackers, nerds, dancers - everyone is welcome. However, note that some technical affinity is required. Some experience in programming and electronics will come in useful, specifically in soldering and java, but is not necessary. We advise you to download the Arduino software and have a look at the Arduino website before.
TRAINERS
Ubi de Feo (It) will lead the first days of the workshop. Massimo Banzi (It), who invented Arduino, is present during the last two days.

Mediamatic space: Forgotten Flags by Florian Thalhofer
Dates:
Mon Apr 02, 2007 00:00 - Mon Apr 02, 2007
Vergessene Fahnen (Forgotten Flags) by Florian Thalhofer
Exhibition concerning the need for pride and the fear of symbols
30 March - 11 May 2007
Mediamatic, an Amsterdam cultural institute, is holding an exhibition, Vergessene Fahnen, by the German artist Florian Thalhofer from 30 March to 11 May 2007. Using an interactive road movie and photos, he gives an account of fellow countrymen who, months after the World Cup football in 2006, are still hanging the national flag out. The exhibition is about the need for pride and the fear of symbolism. The hours of opening are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 18.00 to 23.00. With Weiswurst and Bavarian beer. http://www.mediamatic.net/fahnen
Germans think that showing the national flag is sinister. World Cup football in 2006 brought about a notable swing. Germans overcame - temporarily - their fear of association with right-wing nationalism. They were proud of their fatherland and put out flags en masse for the first time. But if flags are still fluttering six months after the World Cup, Florian Thalhofer would like to know why. Should he be afraid of the owners of these forgotten flags?
Thalhofer started searching for people who had kept their flags flying, together with photographer Juliane Henrich. These encounters resulted in an interactive road movie that may be read as an image of the times, not just of Germany, but also of Western Europe.
The exhibition goes into the concept of 'homeland' and the ambivalent feelings that national symbols may arouse. The flag appeals to feelings of unity and identity. But uneasy feelings about right wing radicals are never far away. Vergessene Fahnen poses questions about the stereotypes and prejudices of the viewer, and of the maker.
An edition of the cd-rom magazine Mediamatic Off-line will be published alongside the exhibition with the complete Korsakow version of Vergessene Fahnen. The photos in the exhibition are by Juliane Henrich. A programme with accompanying workshops such as making sausage and a Nina Hagen Fanclub night go with the exhibition. And we will be serving Weiswurst with Bavarian beer.
There is free access to Vergessene Fahnen on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 18.00 to 23.00 hours, from 30 March up to and including 11 May 2007.
Making the film Vergessene Fahnen was partly possible thanks to the Goethe Instituut, in the context of German chairmanship of the EU.

Mediamatic Hybrid World Lab workshop
Dates:
Mon May 07, 2007 00:00 - Wed Mar 21, 2007
Mediamatic workshop Hybrid World Lab
7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 11 May 07
Mediamatic organizes a new workshop in which the participants develop prototypes for hybrid world media applications.
While the internet is still thought of as a virtual space, it is quickly gaining foot in the physical world. An Internet-of-Things is under construction, with RFID as a key technology. Unique digital identification and GPS tracking devices link digital media to places and objects. Mobile phones and urban screens allow the media to be where people are.
This workshop explores the role of media makers ('content creators') in the context of this increasingly intimate fusion of digital and physical space.
WORKSHOP SET_UP AND TOOLS
The workshop kicks-off with four free public lectures on Hybrid world themes and issues.
The workshop is an intense process in which the participants design projects (applications, services, games, programmes, formats) that use the physical world as interface to online media: location based media, everyday objects as media interfaces, urban screens, and cultural application of RFID technology.
As practical research tools the participants can use the Symbolic Table 2.0 : a networked, RFID powered media player. See: http://www.mediamatic.net/symbolictable
Nokia 3220 with NFC shell: mobile phone enabled with a RFID reader and writer, with the necessary tags to explore locative RFID projects. See www.elasticspace.com
A collection of various RFID readers, tags, for projects that need more basic coding, and Arduino kits are also available for those who have experience with them.
TARGET GROUP
The workshop is designed for a maximum of 16 media makers, artists, designers and producers.
All participants are assisted personally in realizing their workshop projects. Participants are not required to have specific technical knowledge of new media, but experience with developing content for interactive media is recommended.
TRAINERS & LECTURERS
We are happy to announce that two of the leading researchers in this field, Timo Arnall (Norway) and Nicolas Nova (Switzerland), are confirmed trainers and lecturers in this workshop.
Two other international specialists: Matt Adams of British hybrid world theatre group BlastTheory and urban screens researcher Mirjam Struppek are still to be confirmed.
INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION
More information on the content of this workshop can be found at:
http://www.mediamatic.net/hybridworldlab
and in the workshop reader: http://www.mediamatic.net/article-9691-en.html
The price for this workshop is EUR 360,-. This includes VAT, lunch, technical support, equipment and a person page in the www.mediamatic.net website
You can register for this workshop at http://www.mediamatic.net/workshopregistration
Please include a short bio and and your reason for joining the workshop.
