BIO
Hello :)

I live in SW MO, USA. I share a house with my folks, my sweet Yorkie girl, and a few cats.

I am learning about art. I am definitely a beginner in creating any of it. I am interested in discovering, seeing, discussing, and studying the multitude types of art.

There are so many interesting things here :).

The Commenter: A Lament

I do get the lists. I'm way behind on reading, partly because I can lose track of time so easily while reading and watching and following links. I find much of this fascinating.

The Commenter: A Lament

This is why every time I consider donating/subscribing to rhizome, my money goes somewhere else. There is very little to no community on rhizome. Geographically, I can't just "drop by," so besides looking on the front page and archives, there's really nothing else I can do. Little or no discussion, being one of the newbies that was put in her place (not funny, btw) - why should I give $?

DISCUSSION

What are some basic/seminal artworks for either/or installation or netart?

I came back to Rhizome a few days ago. On the donation page, the Morphine Pill by Bunny Rogers and Filip Olszewski caught my attention, which then led to a study of Sister Unn's, their art installation for six months during 2011-2012. My grandparents owned a florist/wedding chapel and nursery when I was first born; my parents worked there for awhile - Dad in the nursery, and Mom doing deliveries and other things in the floral shop/wedding chapel. So Sister Unn's brought back some memories.

However, it took several links in a Google search before I found Bunny's explanation of what I was supposed to get out of the installation. I don't think I would have ever gotten that on my own. I find the same thing with netart, often I don't "get" what I "should." I realize reactions, thoughts, emotions, experiences and people are different, yet I'd like to sometimes at least feel that I'm on the same wavelength as the artist.

I have a dial up modem, an XP computer, and the wish to learn and understand. I would like beginning places or references or resources for installation art and/or net art, at least to begin with. I am going through Rhizome's archives with several searches.

If you would please point me in a right direction, I would appreciate it!

Thanks,
Theresa

Breaking the Ice

(I hope this doesn't post 3 times, since this is the third time I have tried.)

Hi.

I get Rhizome's emails, but don't get out to the site much, so maybe these are already in place - but I'd like to see some reviews of the events, etc., and maybe some online tutorials/discussions of how to look at art, what's art, and so forth.

I live in the Midwest USA, around Joplin, MO, and almost all we have here are pictures (photography and painting), though occasionally there are fiber art and mixed media shows, with touches of sculpture and pottery.

I have to stay local; don't even get to Springfield, much less Kansas City or Tulsa/Oklahoma City. I look at Rhizome's emails to see what I'm missing :).

So, it would be nice for me to read some factual reviews. 'This is what this looked like,' and/or 'This is what this sounded like,' for example.

I have a dial up connection, so using YouTube and Vimeo can be lengthy. I appreciate them, but reading is faster, especially with the amount of emails that I get from rhizome.

Maybe, to save space, you could only keep the reviews etc. for two years?

Also, what I know about art you could fit in a thimble and have room for Jupiter left over. I'm learning - slowly - about older art (the great painters, etc.), but I get lost in modern and not so modern.

I'm not sure whether to try to start a discussion on Rhizome about artists and/or referring to websites that aren't Rhizome.

Keep up the good work!

Theresa
