Art In Your Pocket
Hi,
Totally agree with nick on this subject. The expression 'iPhone Art' should be questioned on every level - what does it mean? That the work is exploring the possibilities of the iPhone? Assuming that is what is meant, then most of the work covered in the article misses the point - it seams to be using the possibilities of a sexy, nice screen activated by touch - it is not really exploring what the mobile phone is, as nick said - a communication tool and, I add, a sensing device of everyday life. Even if these are issues to be explored, they are not an iPhone creation, they were not invented by Apple and it is not Apple's role to access their validity.

Data Visualization & Processing Workshop, by Karsten Schmidt (toxi)
Dates:
Mon Apr 20, 2009 00:00 - Thu Apr 09, 2009
Location:
Portugal
Data is everywhere around us.
Through the ongoing technological developments and digitalization, ever more aspects of our lives become subject to scrutinizing and so become measurable. The rapidly increasing amount of data being published online constitutes great political, cultural, artistic and design challenges to society and individuals alike. This trend is accelerated by the increased introduction of ubiquitous computing systems into various aspects of our everyday.
Data visualization of large datasets still is a relative young field of design, but it also is a very necessary one. In this world of absolute data abundance we need new means to manage, combine, analyse & view these. We need to explore new visual languages and other forms of expression to help us cope, find patterns and gain new insights or even just retain an overview of various topics.
Over the three days of this workshop we will explore the nature of data as much as various techniques to visualize it. We will focus on working with Processing, but also make use of other opensource tools & languages better suited for other parts of the visualization creation process. Since the workshop only lasts for 3 days, you’re expected to have a good understanding of at least the basic Processing concepts & programming constructs. That way we can focus better on the actual topic at hand.
About Karsten Schmidt
Karsten Schmidt (aka toxi) is a software developer, designer and artist with particular interest in computational design. For the past 15 years he’s been laterally involved in a wide range of digital disciplines. With his studio PostSpectacular, he is actively exploring possibilities at the intersection of design, art and software development. Collaborating cross-disciplinary with other creative minds, Karsten’s design approach is based on treating ideas as software at the heart, which in turn informs all other facets of each project. When not creating, he travels the world consulting companies and developer & designer communities about open source and employing collaborative tools. Karsten has been a key contributor to the Processing.org project and to various books about programming and graphic design, and his work has been featured in the press and exhibited internationally, including the MoMA, New York.

iPhone Insider Workshop
Development for the iPhone
James Eberhardt (CA)
26, 27, 28 February 09, Lisbon, Portugal
The mobile phone has reached a level of adoption that far exceeds that of the personal computer. As a result, it is an emerging platform for applications that have the potential to change the way we live and communicate. The iPhone, since its launch, last July has had an incredible adoption curve and is reshaping people’s relationship with their mobile phones and forcing competitors to define themselves against the iPhone. So what is it all about?
This workshop aims to get inside the iPhone and understand its advantages (and disadvantages) and how to create software for it.
The focus of this workshop will be split between theory and practical. Attendees will be divided into groups to work on small tutorials to create applications for their iPhone.
Who this workshop is for:
Designers, developers and anybody else who would like to explore using the iPhone in their creative projects. No programming experience is required, but it would be an asset.
About James Eberhardt
James is co-founder of Echo Mobile and a Technical Director with over 13 years of experience of leading convergent media projects, and works with production companies to deliver content and stories to audiences through any available screen - particularly the ubiquitous screens of mobile devices. In 2009 James will be conducting workshops on iPhone development in Toronto, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

TODAY - Mobile Application
Dates:
Tue Jul 01, 2008 00:00 - Tue Jul 01, 2008
Hi all,
Just to let you know about our latest project - TODAY, Mobile Application.
TODAY is a piece of generative design for mobile phones.
It’s an application that visualizes personal mobile communication. It sits on the periphery of the machine, monitoring our connectivity through the number and type of calls we receive, subtly displaying them back to us, in the form of a generative graphic. Here, the visual result is a figurative and seemingly abstract picture - the story of your day. Some days will be really colourful and wired, others quieter and more reflective, either way the resulting visuals will always be personal, unrepeatable and unique.
What lies at TODAY’s core was the idea of using personal data as the basis for an aesthetic system, while providing individuals with a visual diary of their communication patterns.
It’s an intimate piece that ‘lives’ in your pocket.
It's freely distributed for Symbian phones at http://today.cada1.net
