Sissu Tarka is an artist and researcher whose current interest lies in the criticality of emerging practices and economies of media art. Her work addresses themes of non-linearity, modes of resistance, and articulations of present-day tendencies towards the democratic, active work. In her media art practice Sissu works with digital animation, installation and drawing, and her recent project REVOLV-OLUTION involves a speech-performance, a tower and a re-assembled Manga-notepad. Her inspirations are pop-up books, octagons, white snowy landscapes, Japan, and post-communist systems.
In 2006 Sissu completed a practice-based Ph.D. in Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins College, London (titled Doubling in a Practice of Animation Doubling in a Practice of Animation), and in June 2007 she joined CRUMB, Curatorial Resource for Upstart Media Bliss, University of Sunderland. When not with CRUMB Sissu collaborates with Colm Lally (E:ventGallery London) to explore dynamics of event and event structures in contemporary practices, where the event shapes and to some degree triggers our understanding of a site, the construction of dialogues, the artistic inter-vention, and social processes. Their work is an experiment and a space of often mundane, everyday actions; it adapts a dialogical structure during the creation of artistic encounters. Current projects involve: work-shops; studio_links; a book/a residency; an open gallery system.
Sissu’s curatorial practice includes her collaboration with the Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck. There she co-curated shows including Arbeit*/work (2005) which toured to Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Cork, and Ormeau Baths Gallery, Belfast; or There is no border, there is no border, there is no border, no border, no border, no border, I wish (2007).
