BIO
Silvia Malagrino is a Chicago-based artist, native of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is an Associate Professor at The School of Art and Design of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her innovative interdisciplinary work in multiple media - including photography, installation, video, sound and light projections - amalgamates critical thinking with poetry, and metaphor with documentation.

Malagrino is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including The National Endowment for the Arts Creativity Grant 2004, six Illinois Arts Council Artist’s Fellowships (2004/2000/96/93/89/87); The National Endowment for the Arts Regional Fellowship (87); and was nominated for the Infinity Award of the International Center for Photography (98). Her works, which have been exhibited widely in the United States, Latin America and Europe, are included in the collections of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; the Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI; La Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris, France; and the Fundaçao Athos Bulçao, Brasilia, Brazil, among others.

Her most recent work - BURNT ORANGES - is a 90-minute feature-length experimental documentary about the long-term effects and repercussions, personal and social, of Argentina's 1970’s state terrorism. The film reveals current life in Buenos Aires through the eyes of a long-gone native; it uncovers compelling testimonies of transformation and hope, and underscores today’s global necessity to defend human rights, and to preserve human dignity and democratic values.
