Shauna Jean Doherty graduated from OCAD University in Toronto, Canada with an MFA in Art Criticism and Curatorial Practice. She previously completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree (Hons), double majoring in Book and Media Studies and Semiotic Theory and Communications at the University of Toronto. With a foundation in semiotic theory and deconstruction, these themes recur in both her curatorial projects and video art practice. Shauna Jean has curated exhibitions and events independently in Toronto since 2009 in a variety of commercial and artist-run spaces which include, Vtape, Xpace Cultural Centre, The Black Cat Gallery, The University of Toronto’s EEL Gallery, OCADU Graduate Gallery, The Art Gallery of Ontario, The Gladstone Hotel Art Bar, and Hashtag Gallery.
She has written arts reviews for C Magazine and the Journal of Curatorial Studies. In the summer of 2013 she served as assistant curator at Hashtag Gallery in Toronto and interned at the Art Gallery of Ontario for the First Thursdays Program. She has since served as a programming assistant for the First Thursdays at the Art Gallery of Ontario and as a programming assistant at Hamilton Artists Inc. She has also served as an intern at Georgia Scherman Projects. Currently she is the Outreach and Distribution Manager for Video Out at VIVO Media Arts Centre and acts as the Vancouver correspondent for the American art criticism publication, Daily Serving.
