BIO
Born in 1979, Napoli, Italy, Ruben Coen-Cagli holds a PhD in Physics and is currently a Research Associate in Neuroscience based in NYC. As a visual artist, he pursues a convergence of his artistic practice with the ideas and techniques of computation, neuroscience, robotics and interactivity. From 2004 to 2007 he has been a visiting scholar at the Academy of Fine Arts of Napoli. His interdisciplinary projects have been presented at PixelACHE (Kiasma Museum, Helsinki), Institute Jean Nicod (Paris), CMCA 2006 (Goldsmiths College, London), DMS’2006 (Grand Canyon, USA), Generative Art Conference (Milano), and in several solo and collectives in Napoli.

In the last 10 years I have been immersed in science, while practicing as a visual artist. My works rely on the confluence of two approaches: the context is provided by viewing through the lens of science the simple acts and facts of daily life, such as the experience of our own body and how it constantly modifies the environment, or the way routine behavior reshapes our visual perception. On the other hand I combine diverse techniques such as painting, interactive displays, and robotics, to create hybrid ecosystems that expose the fragile equilibrium between biological and artificial elements.
