R. Streitmatter-Tran is a media artist working in transit between Boston and Vietnam. His work investigates the liminal spaces that exist within and among performance art, video, cinema, installation, new media and design.
His current research focuses on media and cultural production in Southeast Asia. Current issues explored in his work include memory, popular media, war & tourism, exile and transition, language, and narrative. He relocated to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in September 2003 to continue work in these areas.
He is a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art majoring in the Studio for Interrelated Media (SIM) graduating with distinction.
Former experience includes teaching fellow positions at Harvard University, research at the MIT Media Lab and a three-year stint with the U.S. Army. Recent events include a position as visiting lecturer at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts University; a one-month media arts residency in Chiang Mai, Thailand; a video installation, Body Frame/Video Frame at L'Espace in Hanoi. He has exhibited work, both solo and collaborative work at venues including the Brandt Gallery, Evos Arts, the Mobius Art space, The Berwick Institute, Binh Quoi Park, and The Blue Space Gallery.
He is a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University in Creative New Media. As a member of ProjectOne, a Vietnam-based arts group, he will travel to Seoul and New York in September 2004 to present the groups new work.
