FULL-TIME FACULTY POSITION IN VISUAL AND CRITICAL STUDIES
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Department of Visual and Critical Studies seeks applicants for a full-time tenure-track or tenured faculty position beginning August 2016. The department seeks an artist with a research-based practice to join a vibrant interdisciplinary group of scholars, writers, and artists with hybrid and multi-platform practices. The successful candidate will join a department committed to an active research culture and excellence in teaching, while playing an important role in the dedicated degree programs in visual and critical studies that the department offers at both the MA and BA level.

PROGRAM PROFILE
The Department of Visual and Critical Studies was founded in 2000 to provide a home for the study of visual media across many different disciplines, as well as development of hybrid research practices, particularly the overlap between studio and scholarly production. One of 23 departments at the school, VCS includes five full-time faculty and 15 part-time faculty members who offer 40 courses each year to graduate and undergraduate students including 20 dedicated MA students in VCS and 50 dedicated BA students in VCS. RESPONSIBILITIES

PROGRAM PROFILE
The Master of Arts (MA) in New Arts Journalism at SAIC is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and experiences to write and speak about the arts for diverse audiences. Located in a vibrant school of contemporary art and design, the MA in New Arts Journalism program provides full engagement with the theory and practice of journalism as well as the opportunity to work closely with artists, art historians, cultural theorists, art and design critics connected to a major American museum.
The MA Program in New Arts Journalism works with its graduate students and others from around the SAIC community to prepare them with the skills needed to meet the challenges of a career in cultural journalism. These involve the acquisition of design and production skills across media, peer reviewed short form writing, an immersion into the contexts of contemporary culture, and training in the ethics, procedures, and evolving platforms of journalism today.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for: teaching graduate courses in the department; conducting research and/or practice in the area of Arts Journalism; and contributing to the program and the School through administrative duties and service.
This position will also exhibit a high level of competence in one or more other academic arenas (for example, though not limited to, SAIC Departments and Programs such as Art History, Theory, and Criticism, Visual Critical Studies, Arts Administration and Policy, MFA in Writing, or a studio-based program), since participation in the academic life of SAIC outside of the primary commitment to New Arts Journalism will be part of the position.
The director will be responsible for hiring and reviewing faculty, shaping the curriculum, and providing extensive advising to prospective and current graduate students. The director will also work with various campus offices including the Office of Student Affairs, the Career + Co-op Center, and the Office of Institutional Advancement to identify experiential learning opportunities and serve as the face of the New Arts Journalism program to external entities and resources.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: MA or equivalent. Some teaching and/or administrative experience preferred. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in one or more of the many forms of Arts Journalism that comprise its contemporary position. PROGRAM PROFILE
The Master of Arts (MA) in New Arts Journalism at SAIC is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and experiences to write and speak about the arts for diverse audiences. Located in a vibrant school of contemporary art and design, the MA in New Arts Journalism program provides full engagement with the theory and practice of journalism as well as the opportunity to work closely with artists, art historians, cultural theorists, art and design critics connected to a major American museum.
The MA Program in New Arts Journalism works with its graduate students and others from around the SAIC community to prepare them with the skills needed to meet the challenges of a career in cultural journalism. These involve the acquisition of design and production skills across media, peer reviewed short form writing, an immersion into the contexts of contemporary culture, and training in the ethics, procedures, and evolving platforms of journalism today.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for: teaching graduate courses in the department; conducting research and/or practice in the area of Arts Journalism; and contributing to the program and the School through administrative duties and service.
This position will also exhibit a high level of competence in one or more other academic arenas (for example, though not limited to, SAIC Departments and Programs such as Art History, Theory, and Criticism, Visual Critical Studies, Arts Administration and Policy, MFA in Writing, or a studio-based program), since participation in the academic life of SAIC outside of the primary commitment to New Arts Journalism will be part of the position.
The director will be responsible for hiring and reviewing faculty, shaping the curriculum, and providing extensive advising to prospective and current graduate students. Concerned with both professional competency within the field of product design and with critical agency, the program maintains an expansive understanding of the production and consumption of objects.
The School offers a professional Master of Design degree in Designed Objects. The AIADO department also offers courses within the interdisciplinary BFA and MFA programs. Teaching in Designed Objects includes collaborations with the Departments of Sculpture, Ceramics, Fashion Design, and others. The Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty position in Designed Objects, starting Fall 2016. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with quality and output of production, scholarship, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.
Design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is taught in close collaboration with Fine Arts, Art History, and other disciplines and through substantive engagement with external partners in the professional and cultural community. Faculty in Designed Objects bring theoretical, material, practical, and social issues into studio teaching. The program is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in: design strategy and systems; responsible design; design futures (trends, branding, identity, entertainment); and design innovation (materials, technology, interaction, engineering). The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expands the intellectual conversation of the field.
PROGRAM PROFILE
The Designed Objects program focuses on the critical re-thinking of the object, and the creative design of the tools, furnishings, and networks that constitute everyday life. Borrowing from industrial design as well as disciplines such as systems design, furniture design, experience design, and interaction design, the program teaches designers to use objects as a medium for social agency. Concerned with both professional competency within the field of product design and with critical agency, the program maintains an expansive understanding of the production and consumption of objects.
The School offers a professional Master of Design degree in Designed Objects. The AIADO department also offers courses within the interdisciplinary BFA and MFA programs. Teaching in Designed Objects includes collaborations with the Departments of Sculpture, Ceramics, Fashion Design, and others. Recent or ongoing projects include external partnerships with Rosanna Orlandi Gallery, CB2, Andrea Zittel, the Chicago Architecture Biennale, and Kickstarter. RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for: teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in the department; conducting research and/or practice in the area of design; and contributing to the program and the School through administrative duties and service.
QUALIFICATIONS
A terminal degree in design or a related field is preferred. Experience in teaching and a track record of excellence through a minimum of 5 years experience in practice related to design is expected. A demonstrated national or international profile is preferred.
