The seventh East Wing collection, Culture Bound, will exhibit artists’ responses to the cultural realities of the metropolis. By examining roles of perception and categorization, the works will represent the interactions of groups and individuals within the ‘global city’. It started from the premise that we are all essentially culture bound, conditioned within a network of value systems that continue to engage with the ‘other’.
We have worked outwards from a view of how official ‘multiculturalism’ can act as a decoy to conceal ideological intolerance and social inequality. The works will address the effects of and intentions behind definitions of our society, aiming to deconstruct cultural mythologies formed by media, language and communication.
Displayed in the seminar rooms and communal spaces of the Courtauld, the exhibition aims to provoke and challenge, questioning the role of the individual within today’s society.
