Pointer and New York Art Department are pleased to announce YOU ARE HERE, a group exhibition featuring the works of Big Egypt 2020, Jason Ciocci, Josh Reames, Kathy Grayson, Phillip Stearns, Rick Silva, Ryder Ripps, Thomas Pregiato, Trudy Benson, and #BEENTRILL#—ten artists from various movements of new media art.
The exhibition will take place at The Hole and will be on display from October 11th through October 13, 2013.
Despite the exacting nature of its title—YOU ARE HERE—the exhibition’s underlying theme is randomness. More sensibility than sense, more reblogged than curated, YOU ARE HERE is an exhibition informed by Likes and unpredictably distracted web-browsing histories of never ending hyperlinked and meta-tagged content.
As it would then, the artworks brought together do not follow a concise aesthetic agenda. But as chance would have it, the artists brought together, in one form or another, all capitalize on randomness and/or imperfection to create their works of art. Some inject errors into precision tools and systems to create unpredictable results, other use precise code and high-tech apps to create chaos, while others use technological imperfections to communicate ideas. At the very least, randomness is addressed as a subject matter.
The artworks in the exhibition are a cross-section of Internet culture and the impact of technology on the type of art we consume and how we consume it.
YOU ARE HERE speaks to creativity’s inherent need of freedom at a time when we are increasingly faced with the redefinition of freedom, the choice between it and our love of technology and the internet. With this exhibition, we have our cake and eat it too!
NEWSPRINT
YOU ARE HERE will also take shape as a large format Poster Zine, effectively freezing a point in the cultural landscape in which we find ourselves. The YOU ARE HERE Poster Zine edition will be printed on newsprint, an affordable, fragile and antiquated medium with physical properties that hardly stands the test of time. Despite these impermanent characteristics, the Poster Zine addresses the sense of ownership art collectors crave but is rare when consuming art online.

#REALMRECOGNIZEREALM is the first ever tour featuring exclusively Internet artists, Super Users, and social media virtuosos. Like you, we're obsessed and inspired by extremely active internet identities.
This October, we're embarking on a 6-day, all-ages tour of the East Coast with performances by seven Internet artists/personalities in untraditional, DIY spaces. We're breaking down the 5th wall: the laptop.
The REALM RECOGNIZE REALM artists compulsively harness the power of The Net to create an engaging, captivating personal self-image/brand that is both critical and celebratory of social media, web 2.0, and 21st century consumerism.

Earlier this year, REALM RECOGNIZE REALM won Rhizome and Tumblr's first ever Internet Art Grant, a "commissioning award for the creation of new Internet artworks from the Tumblr community." The jury included New Museum director and curator of the 2012 Venice Biennale Massimiliano Gioni, artist Jon Rafman, and performance artist Laurie Anderson. Thanks to them, we're partially funded but need to cover the rest of production costs!

THE REALM LOVES YOU!
REALM RECOGNIZE REALM will create physical-world performance spaces that are closer to the experience of tumblr than to the experience of the club— social gatherings that embrace all of the awkwardness, banality, and domesticity of the Tumblr or Web 2.0 cam performance but IRL.
The shows will be a killer mix of live music, projections, inspirational lectures, performance, merchandise, and most importantly one on one REAL LIFE encounters with 21st Century DIGITAL ICONS.
Instead of clubs and bars, the shows will happen in un-traditional spaces: your mom's basement, strip mall parking lots, suburban homes, rooftops. These performances will be intimate, and raw in the best way possible—like the best cam-vids.
We're launching this Kickstarter to give all of the likers, fav-ers, sharers, re-tweeters and re-bloggers a chance to participate, support, and take home a giant piece of THE REALM!
