Lindsay Grace is a professor, game designer, programmer and artist.

Lindsay is an associate professor at American University and founding director of the American University Game Lab and Studio. His game designs have received awards from the Games for Change Festival, Meaningful Play, Advances in Computer Entertainment and Gamescape. He has published more than 40 papers, articles and book chapters on games since 2009. His creative work has been selected for showcase in more than eight countries and 12 states, including New York, Paris, Rio De Janeiro, Singapore, Istanbul, Sao Paulo, Chicago and Vancouver. He has given talks at the Game Developer's Conference (GDC), SXSW, Games for Change Festival/Tribeca Film Festival, the Boston Festival of Independent Games and many others. He is currently the Vice President of the Global Game Jam™ and serves on the board for the Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA). He has curated or co-curated several exhibits of games and play.

Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Emerging/Digital Media

The School of Communication at American University, Washington, D.C., invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of Emerging/Digital Media to begin in fall 2014. Candidates may be from the academy or industry. Academics should have a proven publication record in scholarly or professional venues as well as significant experience in emerging/digital media. Industry professionals should have significant experience in emergent-media fields (five years or more). University-level teaching experience with a record of strong evaluations is preferred.

The successful candidate will be skilled in both theory and practice, and demonstrate an ability to think and work across current and emerging media platforms, including but not limited to, gaming, mobile media, digital culture, social media, and multimedia storytelling in a variety of forms. The candidate should have a creative, professional, scholarly agenda that focuses on innovative forms of public media. We seek a thoughtful leader and active practitioner who advances the understanding of emerging practices.

Responsibilities include teaching a 2-2 load of undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising student research, and mentoring students. This faculty member will be expected to work with the administrators and faculty across the School of Communication’s four divisions (Communication Studies, Film and Media Arts, Journalism, Public Communication) to develop curriculum, foster collaboration, and help catalyze initiatives to promote an integrated, cutting-edge approach to emerging-media teaching and research. The successful candidate is expected to participate in School of Communication and University governance. Candidates should hold a M.F.A., M.A., M.S., Ph.D., or other advanced degree in the field, as appropriate. The position, which begins in August 2014, offers an opportunity to work with the School’s world-class faculty and affords the unique professional, research, social, and cultural opportunities of a top-ranked school and university in Washington, D.C.

Critical Gameplay

Critical Gameplay is a collection of strategically designed video games. Each game asks the question, what do common game mechanics teach us? Each of the games in the collection are designed to help reevaluate our perspective on gameplay experiences. Critical gameplay seeks to offer alternate perspectives on the way we play.

The Exhibition:
Several video games will be displayed for visitors to play on multiple stations. Each games evaluates a specific gameplay standard and actively works against it. The hope is the initiation of an intellectual dialogue about the opportunities in unexplored gameplay mechanics.

The exhibition will also include other video games and interactive works created by Lindsay Grace.

The exhibition is open to the public and will be held for one night on April 17th, 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm.
