kanarinka, a.k.a. Catherine D’Ignazio, is an artist and educator. Her artwork is participatory and distributed – a single project might take place online, in the street and in a gallery, and involve multiple audiences participating in different ways for different reasons. Her practice is collaborative even when she says it’s not. Her artwork has been exhibited at the ICA Boston, Eyebeam, MASSMoCA, and the Western Front among other locations.

Give me a break. Rhizome is a platform for viewing, discussing and
communicating about net.art, not a profit-making machine. I am happy to
support such a service both through financial and other forms of
participation. I consider rhizome to be an invaluable **service**
provided to the net.art community. Indeed rhizome is a key reason why
there is any kind of community at all.

I doubt they are going to be making a profit off your measly $5
contribution, but if you feel that strongly about it I have nothing
against rhizome taking your work out of the art base, removing you from
their list, and never mentioning your work ever again on the site.

best,
kanarinka

my work has been included in a number of books and magazines.
it is customary that when this occurs i am either paid,
or at the very least receive a free copy of the publication.

this is only fair - considering they are profiting in part from my work
regardless of whether it was created especially for their publication or
not.

it is most unfair that you are being paid,
while those who generate your content are not.

Paradise Redux: this weekend at Fort Point Open Studios in Boston

Dates:
Fri Oct 18, 2002 00:00 - Wed Oct 16, 2002

Buona Sera from iKatun-land,

We'd like to invite you out to see Paradise in a new incarnation at Gallery M3 in the Artists' Community Building (300 Summer Street) during Fort Point Open Studios this weekend. We've worked hard to re-envision Paradise in a smaller, entirely different space. It's worth seeing (IMHO) for those of you who saw it a first time.

Read below or open the PDF at http://www.ikatun.com/ParadisePressRelease_FortPoint.pdf for reception, hours, details, info and more.

Hope to see you again.............

Cheers,
Kanarinka

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The iKatun Collective presents

Paradise: A large-scale interactive artwork at the intersection of Art & Technology

“Paradise”, a large-scale interactive installation created by the iKatun collective and based on Dante’s Paradise will be exhibited at Gallery M3 at the Artists’ Community Building at 300 Summer Street from October 18th to November 30th, 2002.

iKatun’s Paradise is based on Dante’s Paradise from the Divine Comedy, however, iKatun’s Paradise is not about perfect morality but about perfect information. iKatun’s Paradise alludes to a faultless model of information to which all media systems aspire and a space where entropy does not exist.

Visitors to the Paradise installation walk through labyrinths of white fabric and minimalist soundscapes to reach a large grid of LED lights controlled by a computer program. The LED grid runs patterns of light based on “The Game of Life” . The patterns change and evolve based on the visitor’s voice.

Paradise involved the work of more than 10 local artists, programmers, engineers, and musicians working collaboratively over the past year. Paradise will be presented at the Gallery M3 in the Artists’ Community Building in conjunction with Fort Point Open Studios weekend.

Paradise will be open during the opening reception for the Fort Point Arts Community Gallery’s Group Show on Friday, October 18th, from 5PM to 8PM. The exhibit will continue to be open to the public during Fort Point Open Studios: Saturday, October 19th & Sunday, October 20th from 11AM to 5PM. Thereafter, Paradise can be viewed by making an appointment via email (paradise@ikatun.com) or telephone (617.501.6538).

Invitation to Paradise

Hello Rhizomers,

If any of you are in the Boston area over the next week I'd like to invite you out to see iKatun's voice-responsive installation, "Paradise", at the Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont Street.

The artwork is based on Paradise from Dante's Divine Comedy, however it takes information, rather than religion, as its starting point. The artwork fills a small theater with white fabric, minimalist soundscapes and a voice-responsive LED grid driven by a computer algorithm called "The Game of Life". I'm including the official press release below if you want more details.

the hours are:

Saturday 11AM - 10PM, opening reception 6PM - 8PM
Sunday 12noon - 6PM
Monday 12noon - 5PM
Tues - Thurs - 12 noon - 5PM, 7PM - 9PM

Hope that some of you will be able to make it!

cheers,
kanarinka
