The art of the XXI century is headed sharply to a digital form where the support is no longer the object: in the wide world before us through the thousands of computer networks that link us all over the world, the Internet becomes not only as a important mean of artistic disseminating but also a creative one.
It appears as a hidden world to the sight (the digital world requires to be perceived a computer screen), another world (virtual and not real) is difficult to see beyond the bright pixels that separate it from our reality. To know this world, to realize their creative potential, we must interact with it.
Intending to bring this world to the general public, through exposure on the Internet and in physical spaces, the IC0 Cultural Association presents the fifth FONLAD festival, curated by the portuguese artist Jose Vieira.
The Online Festival of Digital Arts is an event focused on the Internet in the format of a publication / web gallery of art projects of photography, digital painting, web art, animation and video. Since its first edition, the festival is complemented by exhibitions of international scope: Madrid (1st edition), Coimbra (2nd edition), Montemor-o-Velho (3rd edition + collection), Madeira’s Biennale - Funchal (4th edition + collection), Belforte del Chienti , Italy (collection) and finally in Guarda (5th edition).
During these 5 years this festival was attended about 170 artists, including some names of international relevance, such as Annie Abrahams, Agricola de Cologne, Caterina Davinio and Jody Zellen.

Theme’s festival: Digital Landscapes

Regulations

Virtual Gallery (no fee under selection):

• Web Art - artists only have to present the index and the link for the page. It will be presented in JPEG format ( Print Screen of index ). This will be the image published in the page of the festival, with respective link. Images must not exceed 2MB.
• Email art - The following formats are allowed: JPEG ( photograph and digital painting ), MPEG and FLX ( video and animation ). - All the works must not exceed 2MB.
Each work must be followed of a presentation text (10 lines). The same it will be published in the page of the festival.

Exhibition (TMG Gallery under selection):

• Photograph and digital painting (fee 50€ under Curator's decision): The participants in photography and digital painting on email art could also present their works to the exhibition: all the materials must be submitted for curator's decision. If selected the artist must send the value of 50€, paid by Paypal, in order of Association of Old Students of University Art School of Coimbra. This value is for the impression of the image in format 100 cm in any side. All images must have the follow: 20cm maximum in each side at 300dpi (no more then 2 MB).

• Video and animation (selection under Curator's decision. No fee): The selected videos and animations must be on a editable format (mpeg or mov) and it will be presented on a screenning projection). Videos must be presented by the internet and, after selection, send it on DVD.
Proposals must be sent to the Association up to 20 June 2009, for the following address: fonlad.festival@gmail.com. The works received after this date will be excluded from the festival.

The Self-Financing Art System (SAFA) is a new project developed by the Virtual Museum of the Unknown Artist. The project consists on award a bi-monthly prize of 1000 euros to the best digital art project. The project selected will be subject of an exhibition at the Museum, and will run in parallel with other activities of the Museum.

In parallel with the work / project selected will also be selected to the exhibition more 3 projects (not awarded).

The pixel is located beyond the image, beyond its representation, taking as pure abstraction, pure unifying concept of reality - the image - whtich is set on the screen. This is all the more credible the more pixie image has, the greater the definition.
Oposed to photo chemistry, whose definition of the image depends on the number of points and its size, higher points less number on the image, then lower definition. The process in digital image is different, because the pixel size does not change: more pixels more image definition.
Donald Kuspit compare the impressionism of Seurat to digital images; the flick is the same as pixel. In this sense, the digital image can be seen as a huge web of colors linked in some way to shape the image.
With The Pixel Project, the UAVM which to present how artist see images through pixels, images as pixels, pixels as art.
