Look At Me Look At Me (DON'T YOU FUCKING LOOK AT ME!)
Dates:
Sat Nov 07, 2009 00:00 - Sat Oct 31, 2009
Look At Me Look At Me
(DON'T YOU FUCKING LOOK AT ME!)
Somewhere between Bruce Nauman and Blue Velvet lies the language of power, voyeurism, representation, memory, desire, fear, and bodily exploration. The works in this exhibition are at once completely disjunctive, disparate. Yet they come together with a certain undercurrent of unease, a repressed Freudian ball of fear and desire that lashes out and once again withdraws into the darkness.
Cinema as dream.
Pop culture as nightmare.
Abstraction as id.
Language as power.
Brian Block / Daniel Derwelis / Heather Dewey-Hagborg /
Molly Emmons / Richard Fear / Jonathan Gabel / Joe Nanashe / Mary Nicholson /
Jamie Powell / Jorge Rojas / Jan Wandrag / Tim Warner

joe • noun informal 1 and ordinary man. 2 N. Amer. coffee.
(FROM THE COMPACT OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY)
Born on August 29, 1979. Named after a fictional character from tv/movies. And tortured by the seemingly predetermined path such a name suggests. On his 29th birthday, Joe Nanashe will exercise the demons that have haunted him since the first time someone recited the lyrics to Hey Joe in conversation. Joe (A Self-Portrait) is the culmination of 29 months of work combing through 144 films that contain character(s) named Joe. Subjectively edited with the only conceptual constant that the name Joe is spoken somewhere in the clip, what remains are abstract fragments of narrative and characterization, revealing how Joe is constructed from the outside in. The individual is erased. Joe becomes an empty vessel, a shape-shifting mass of banality - an obscure, elusive object of desire.
And in the spirit of the occasion, an extra-special gift awaits those who attend the screenings.
