Utopia?

Deadline:
Mon Jan 16, 2012 21:00

Location:
Carbondale, Illinois
United States of America

Studio 27 is looking for short videos and films for our next program at the Big Muddy Film Festival 34 at Southern Illinois University. We are curating a special out-of-competition screening titled "Utopia?" For this program, we are seeking experimental films and videos (under 30 minutes) that critique or express a fundamental shift in the trajectory of contemporary utopian thought and practice. We are interested in work that explores how utopia, as a projection of what is possible in the future, can be an implicit critique of what is lacking in the present, an indication of how far we have to go to achieve an ideal society. As the notion of dystopia is integrally connected to utopia, we also welcome work that is dystopic in nature. How do the limitations and contradictions of the present drive us toward escape or change? Another timely concern is how utopia is not necessarily a physical or geographic space. Rather, it can be an internal space, a transformation of individual or social consciousness. How does the hope for radical social transformation haunt contemporary media art, and how does the utopian work of the historical avant-garde speak to present day aspirations?

For the purpose of this program, we will only consider work that is experimental in nature, or radically pushes the formal or conceptual boundaries of its genre. Please send us a prescreening copy of your work on playable DVD (or provide us a URL where we can stream or download a high quality preview). All submissions must include a brief project synopsis, artist statement, and contact information (email address, phone number).

EVENT

Call For Work: State of Exception

Dates:
Fri Jun 30, 2006 00:00 - Wed May 17, 2006

Studio 27, a micro-cinema showcasing experimental media in the San Francisco Bay Area, is looking for recent short videos and films. Our next screening, in July, takes its title and theme from the book State of Exception by Georgio Agamben. Agamben describes a political condition that has a compelling contemporary resonance in the United States. In states of siege or war, governmental institutions have justified the suspension of civil law, arguing that the higher law of sustaining the state's well-being requires that certain civil liberties be withheld. We are interested in showing documentary and experimental media that responds to this condition, or that opens a dialogue for discussing the necessity or consequences of the current administration's direction. We welcome work from all sides of the political spectrum.

Possible themes might include: human rights and responsibilities, conditions of crisis that are under-represented, the impact of terrorism on everyday life, subversive action and celebration, the degradation of basic civil liberties, the resurgence of racism and discrimination, nationalism and xenophobia, $ymbols for a better tomorrow, new techniques for keeping the public anxious or apathetic, how enhanced surveillance technologies are eroding our privacy, immigration and alienation, and incarceration without due process.

We will accept work under 30 minutes in length on data DVDs (as a Quicktime movie file, especially for digital animations), playable DVDs (all region), or MiniDVs (ntsc).

Submission Deadline (received by): June 30, 2006
