Imagine a world where the discarded, the overlooked and the rancid are cherished. This is a world through Makiola’s eyes, an artist whose practice evolved around ephemera, interaction and intimately obtuse narrative. Taking discarded holey socks from their staple residence; scattered around students bedrooms, transforming them into incredible autonomous creatures then exhibiting them at PS1, Dia Beacon and 5th Berlin Biennale in a series of playful, ephemeral interactions as part of the Sock Monster Project http://sockmonsters.woolywarrior.co.uk. Her most recent works examine the sensual relationship with food and narrative. They’re humourous and surprisingly romantic whilst temporal, sensitive and critically arousing.
