Bas Fisher Invitational Presents: an interdisciplinary solo exhibition by Nancy Garcia
Opening Reception: April 9th 7-10pm
Closing: June 9, 2011
Nancy Garcia's interdisciplinary practice incorporates choreography, music/sound, video, performance, image making, and new media. Often slinging the viewer to the edges of performative events, Garcia draws attention to the exultant body, considering it as a site as well as a vehicle for sound and movement.
For her first solo exhibition in Miami, Garcia shows a new body of work incorporating photography, a new video entitled Power Trio, and a concept audio compilation, Lover's Alarm Clock, for which she asked artist friends to "create a sound you want your lover's to wake up to." Each track will be downloadable and sharable as a smartphone ringtone at http://loversalarmclock.com, and be available for listening in the gallery.
To coincide with O, Miami Poetry Festival, Garcia is creating an audio walk, an experiential sound journey guiding listeners through a select Miami location. The audio file will be playable on most smartphones and portable media players, and will be available along with a walking guide at http://omiami.org and http://basfisherinvitational.com and http://nancygarcia.org on April 15.

LMAKseries: featuring live performances of Kyle Bobby Dunn and Nancy Garcia.
Kyle Bobby Dunn will open the evening with 'intricately woven, dark blankets of sound capable of isolating the most optimistic of personalities'.
Nancy Garcia will close the night: she will whip the crowd into a frenzy.
LMAKseries furthers LMAKproject’s aim to integrate film, video, sound art, and media performance into the gallery’s mission and its vision of the contemporary landscape. One particular interest of the series is in exploring the ongoing inter-relationships between digital media, film, and music, whose practices may incorporate improvisation, computer processing, live interaction, narrative, sculptural and spatial aspects in ways that open our conception of both art practice and reception.
Kyle Bobby Dunn is a Brooklyn, New York based composer born in Canada in 1986. Working outside the realms of traditional composition for classical and perfected instruments i.e. piano, violin, cello - he specializes in arranged work for often large, dense and draining pieces of neo-minimalist and neo-romantic song-craft. His music seems to be about the untechnical aspects and importance of layering, the warmth of the disconnected, and the great channeling of memory and emotion. His work has been described as 'intricately woven, dark blankets of sound capable of isolating the most optimistic of personalities' and 'compositions that are patience incarnate.' He has released his music internationally on Kning Disk (Sweden), Housing (Canada), and Sedimental (US.)
Nancy Garcia is a New York-based artist who holds a Master's degree from New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program in the Tisch School of the Arts. Her work and practice utilizes various media, including dance/choreography, performance, printmaking, sound/music, drawing and video. For over a decade, she has recorded, composed and performed experimental noise/rock music and created choreographic works. She has shown her work at venues such as The Kitchen, Greene Naftali gallery, Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, D’Amelio Terras gallery, KS Art gallery, Tonic (RIP), New Langton Arts, Dixon Place, West Nile, Movement Research / Judson Church, Knitting Factory, and throughout the US, Japan, and Europe, at festivals such as All Tomorrow's Parties and No Fun Fest. Nancy is currently working on several projects, including a new full-length performance and new music releases. Her new solo album, Be The Climb, is out on Ecstatic Peace records + tapes. LMAKseries is curated by Louky Keijsers, Richard Garet and in consultation with Berlin based Andy Graydon.
I need more at The Kitchen & Ecstatic Peace records
Today I am launching a fundraising campaign via Kickstarter.com. With this campaign, I'm trying to raise funds to pay all the talented and gracious professional artists involved in making this project come to life. So far the artists, performers, set and lighting designers, dancers, and musicians have been working for me without pay for months out of love and dedication to their art and the project. I know these are tough times for everyone, but our work continues and hopefully we can make it happen together. Follow the link to the campaign, where you can make a pledge and find out more about the project.
Via this I need more - Kickstarter project page you will find a brief video showing rehearsal footage, links to (unmastered) excerpts from the album, and descriptions of the various levels of contribution/pledges. From limited edition cassettes and CDs of previously unreleased material and handmade books with CDs, to custom ringtones, homecooked dinners, and drinks with the cast, we'll be giving gifts based on your pledge amount.
Here's the catch: All pledges must be made by November 2nd, 2009, and if the goal to this campaign ($1,000.00) is not met by that date, none of the money will be released. This is Kickstarter.com's rule.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly. Thank you!
All the best,
Nancy
