BIO
In June 2008, Glenn joined the Alliance as its first Public Art and Design Manager to formalize and manage its new programming efforts in Times Square. Weiss is known in New York for his early work as co-director of the Storefront for Art and Architecture and curator for Architecture at PS1. He was recruited from south Florida where he worked as an urban planner, university professor and consultant specializing in the role of public art and arts events in the life of civic space and municipalities. He wrote public arts master plans for a number of governments such as Miami Beach, Broward County and Delray Beach. With Rick Lowe of Project Row Houses in 2004, he produced the Delray Beach Cultural Loop linking the diverse communities with multiple arts events and public works.

He developed his community-based art management methods in Seattle where he directed 911 Media Center, and the public art programs for King County and Washington State Convention Center. He has written on art, architecture and urbanism for 20 years in journals such as Arcade Magazine and Seattle Magazine and now for ArtsJournal.com through the blog Aesthetic Grounds. He holds a Masters of Architecture from Columbia University.

he Times Square Alliance, founded in 1992 as a NYC Business Improvement District, keeps the streets clean and safe, promotes local businesses, coordinates major events in Times Square like New Year’s Eve and Broadway on Broadway, manages a visitors center and advocates on behalf of its constituents with respect to a host of public policy, planning and quality-of-life issues. With the economic revival of the district, President Tim Tompkins has built an organization of 135 employees with extensive experience in urban design, event production, marketing and the arts.

UrbanRemix Contest with Sounds from Times Square

Times Square Arts and UrbanRemix, the online and smartphone platform for remixing collected sounds, announce a contest for all artists to record and remix the sounds of Times Square into music. The winner for the best remix of sounds into music will be announced in Times Square on May 12th.

Anyone anywhere is eligible to enter the contest. Contestants in New York are encouraged to visit Times Square and record and upload the sounds through I-Phones and Android based smartphones. Others anywhere can access all the GPS located sounds through the UrbanRemix web site. The contestants can virtually walk through Times Square and mix the sounds into music or soundscapes for the contest. The sounds can be mixed and the free apps downloaded from http://urbanremix.gatech.edu.

Finalists for best recording and best remix will be played live in Times Square on Thursday, May 12 following performances of the remixes by New York-based electronic musicians Travis Thatcher and Damon Holzborn between noon and 1:30 p.m.   An awards ceremony will be held in the Times Square Visitor Center at 7:00 PM on May 12.

The artists of UrbanRemix will led a workshops with approximately 60 students from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School, in Times Square, on Friday, April 15. A second workshop with artists and educators from EyeBeam Art and Technology Center was conducted on Saturday, April 16. As a result of the workshops, approximately 600 rhythmic, harmonic, beautiful, annoying, and unexpected sounds have been recorded, located and uploaded.  These sounds can be used for the contest.

UrbanRemix is a collaborative and locative sound project that invites the public to explore and express the acoustic identity of Times Square by discovering, recording, and remixing sounds. It has been developed through a collaboration of Georgia Institute of Technology professors Jason Freeman, Michael Nitsche, and Carl DiSalvo. Freeman’s music has been presented in Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center Festival. DiSalvo’s digital installation was seen and heard at the Warhol Museum.

Spanning the 1960s to 2011, the works range from bold animations and visual poems to witty performances and vibrant electronic experiments. Nam June Paik's rarely seen Hand and Face (1961) is one of his earliest media works; Dara Birnbaum's 30-second Artbreak was commissioned for broadcast by MTV in 1987. Shigeko Kubota brings a profusion of electronic cherry blossoms to the heart of Times Square, while Martha Rosler eyes domestic labor in a suburban backyard. William Wegman's dogs perform a timeless duet.
