Monster Drawing Rally
Dates:
Sun Mar 13, 2011 14:00 - Sun Mar 13, 2011
Location:
Brooklyn,
New York
United States of America
United States of America
Fulfilling DAC’s mission “to catalyze interaction between visual artists, the local community and the wider public,” the Monster Drawing
Rally is a unique event that invites members of the public to witness what is usually a private creative process.
Audience members will watch as 20-30 artists at a time create work in-person and on the spot. Using materials supplied by DAC, each
group of artists will work for one hour, in shifts starting at 2, 3, 4, and 5. A wide range of drawing styles and working methods will be on display.
The event fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among the participating artists as they to get an inside look at the creative
methods of their fellows. For the seasoned art patron, the Drawing Rally
provides a fresh look at favorite artists and a chance to discover new talents.
While the entire mystery of art making and inspiration will never be fully
understood, this event reveals the work, inspirations and magic that go into art. For the audience as a whole, the Monster Drawing Rally will be both an exciting spectacle and a rare opportunity to bring home original artworks at an affordable price.
All drawings created in the Rally will be hung as finished and may be purchased as soon as they are completed. All work will be for sale at the same low price of $50, in the spirit of accessibility and equality that is integral to DAC.
Kids can get involved from 2-5PM at our children’s drawing station. Drawing Rally artists will be on hand to offer guidance and all materials will be provided by DAC.
At least 70 artists will take part in this inaugural Rally. At this time, the following artists are registered to participate. This list will continue to grow leading up to the event, and the most current artist information will be available on our website.
Participating artists: Leesa Abahuni, Nicole Abahuni, Lauren Barnett, Susan Bee, Barb Choit, Pilar Conde Jenelle Covino, Rodney Dickson, Emily Friend Roberts, Ellis Gallagher, Mimi Gross, Tina Hejtmanek, Cathrin Hoskinson, Malia Jensen, Patrick Keesey, L. The Dumbo Arts Center (DAC) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit contemporary arts organization. DAC gratefully acknowledges the Walentas Family and Two Trees Management LLC for their generous space donations. Special thanks to Marvin Tumaneng for graphic design. Hacking the iTrip with Lea Bertucci and Ed Bear
Dates:
Mon Feb 21, 2011 18:30 - Mon Feb 21, 2011
Location:
Brooklyn,
New York
United States of America

Monday, February 21st, 6:30 PM
$30 | $20 for DAC members
all materials, include iTrip, are included
Modern low power FM radio transmitters are ubiquitous in the
consumer market and ripe with creative applications. One example is the iPod accessory branded the iTrip. Every generation of this device is
specifically designed for each version of the iPod, leaving previous
iterations of the iTrip obsolete and very cheap!
The act of reprogramming and modifying the iTrip to work without an iPod is a unique and simple introduction to FM transmission and digital
electronics with practical and creative motivations. This workshop
requires no previous knowledge of programming, electronics,
electromagnetism, etc. We will go through the reprogramming process,
from breaking into the casing to reprogramming the chip. At the
conclusion of this three hour workshop every participant will have one
hacked iTrip transmitter. We will demonstrate various uses of the
device including generating feedback, using the transmitter as a
wireless microphone, and altering the range though antenna
manipulation. Additionally, we will emphasize the ease and importance
of repurposing obsolete electronics for creative/subversive actions.
About the Instructors
Ed Bear and Lea Bertucci have performed as a Bass Clarinet and Baritone Saxophone duo for approximately four years under the moniker TwistyCat. TwistyCat's compositions explore themes such as electronic abstraction of acoustic timbre, the bleed between the senses of sight and hearing, post-industrial dissonances, and radio as a vehicle for displacing sound.
Lea Bertucci is an interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn NY who works with photography, video and sound. She is a 2007 Tierney fellow, a 2009 Smack Mellon Artist in Residence, and has received a degree in
photography from Bard College. The emphasis of her work lies in the
creative description of space, whether through light, movement or sound.
Ed Bear is a musician and engineer working with found electronics, video, transmission and collective improvisation. As an educator and artist, he aims to technologically empower everyone as scientists and magicians and investigate the questionable calibration of human perception. He has toured extensively in North America and Europe as a former member of the group Talibam!; performing at major venues such as Issue Project Room, free103Point9, Tonic, The Montreal Pop Festival, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and Duke University. In 2009 and 2010 he received NSF funds to study software defined radio and novel energy
harvesting techniques using ionic polymers and metal composites.
