Recession Art is an arts organization devoted to helping emerging artists show and sell their work while giving art lovers and collectors of all incomes an opportunity to buy original work at affordable prices. We believe that in spite of hard economic times, artists and art lovers don’t have to put their passions on hold! We aim to break open the traditional gallery model and make showing, buying, and enjoying art more accessible for people who have been hit by the recession. We believe that we can start our own art stimulus plan today!

'Color War' curated by the Recession Art staff, is now open for submissions.
To lighten and brighten up the festive season of summer, Recession Art will mount the exhibition 'Color War,' a show to celebrate the joy and possibility of color in art. We’re putting a challenge to artists to show us the most rich, vivid, and vibrant artwork possible. We’ll be looking for works that put the summer sun to shame, bringing the heat into the gallery and forcing us to keep our sunglasses on indoors.
This exhibition will be limited to flat work, with a maximum dimension of 24 x 24 inches and preferably smaller. All submitted works must be ready to hang on the wall, with a focus on works on paper, canvas, or wood. All works must be available for sale and be less than $500.

Recession Art is pleased to present our spring 2013 group show at the Invisible Dog Art Center, Facts and Fictions. Facts and Fictions explores themes of fiction, narrative, storytelling, and the tension between what is true and what is real.
No photograph is ever true. In a photograph, your friend is no longer your friend; he is a pattern of light and shadow and geometry on a piece of paper or a screen, and nothing about him exists beyond the discrete parcel of time in which you made the exposure. There is a fiction in every photograph. The same can be said of all visual and written media that engage with stories. Even the most objective recording of events is filtered through an individual’s point of view into a subjective narrative.
However, just because something isn’t true doesn’t mean it can’t be real. The facts of observation can be described in ways that share a kinship with the fabric of lived experience, yet surprise us with the array of their fictional articulations. The artists of Facts and Fictions show how art can make us see and believe in ways that have nothing to do with truth.

During a studio visit Max told Risa about an idea for a show of artists’ proposals for fantastic, nearly impossible exhibitions. Risa was quite taken by the idea, and some months later, when the opportunity to curate this exhibition arose, she thought it might be the right time to manifest Max’s idea. But then she ran into a friend, a film critic, who is currently obsessed with some short films made by Godard in lieu of written proposals to potential funders. He was having trouble getting films financed in the late 70s and 80s, and instead of filling out applications for funding, he made these shorts that were meant to encapsulate the theory and content of the longer films he wanted to make. These shorts now stand as works in-and–of themselves.
Inspired by this idea, BIG FUTURE will showcase finished works that have never been shown before and represent the idea of an as-yet unrealized piece or collection of pieces.

Recession Art's Grand Re-Opening with Danny Ghitis

On March 9, Recession Art will open the doors of our new affordable art gallery and store. We will present solo exhibitions by Featured Artists, curated Open Call exhibitions, and a rotating selection of affordable paintings, photography, prints, drawings, handmade books, and art objects.
To inaugurate the gallery, Recession Art will present a solo exhibition by photographer Danny Ghitis, focusing on his work documenting New York’s Harlem Valley. In a place that he describes as “neither here nor there” Ghitis captures the inhabitants and oddities of forgotten towns just a few hours north of New York City.
In addition to our rotating gallery exhibtions, new highlights in the store will include Christopher Gideon’s America’s Pastime collaged baseball cards, Elizabeth Moran’s corporate office photography, and Tate Foley’s silkscreen books. We will continue our mission to make artwork available to art lovers of every budget- from $1 to $1,000.
