Ela Boyd is an artist from Hollywood, CA. She received her BFA from California College of Arts in San Francisco. Ela is currently a Visual Art MFA candidate at UCSD. In her work, she explores epistemological quandaries of phenomenology with the interplay of light, space and time. Using photography and collage as well as sculptural and new media installation works to conduct formal studies of visual perception, collapsing spatiotemporal modes and ephemeral phenomena. Most recently, she has been working with interactive media to evoke memory and a greater conversation about collective consciousness. Her work has been exhibited in various galleries and art spaces within California, including LA Center for Digital Art, Lawrence Ascher Gallery, Barnsdall Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and Pharmaka Gallery. In 2005, Boyd attended an artist residency at Est Nord Est in Quebec and has been included International exhibitions in Canada and Portugal.

#KEYWORDS For Change

A Digital Movement and Experiment Calling Bloggers, Facebook©, Twitter© and Social Media Users to Action for a Day Dedicated to Uniting Around the Word “#LOVE”

LOS ANGELES, CA: Keywords for Change is facilitating a digital theory experiment and conceptual artistic project that seeks to measure the impact of collective consciousness by creating an incidence of focused thought and communication on the keyword #LOVE. Keywords is asking the public to type the word #LOVE into their blogs, Twitter© feed and Facebook© wall on October 10, 2010 (10.10.10). The 1s and 0s of binary code referenced in the 101010 date makes it a perfect day for an online movement. The experiment plays on our interconnectedness through the World Wide Web and the power words can have with SEO (search engine optimization).

Keywords for Change #LOVE project is chiefly inspired by the work of Princeton researcher, Roger D. Nelson, Ph.D. and the Global Consciousness Project, an international, multi-laboratory collaboration funded by IONS (the Institute of Noetic Sciences), which seeks to measure interactions of global consciousness with physical systems. The GCP’s research has shown that the collective attention of large numbers of people during global events can elicit a widespread emotional response that effects the output of a network of hardware random number generators located in 65 locations around the world. The randomness becomes a less-than-random sequence of data! This project also recalls the research of Dr. Emoto’s Messages from Water project. Since 1999, he has been conducting experiments with water during which speech, thoughts and meditations are directed at water droplets before they are frozen. The crystalline forms captured in photographs of the water, will appear more cohesive and aesthetically pleasing if a positive thought or word was used, making the influence of these thoughts on physical matter visible.

Keywords is conducting a similar experiment in collective consciousness, by capitalizing on the interconnectedness of social media. Keywords for Change will track the results and impact generated by the widespread use of the keyword #LOVE with data visualization and a random number generator on their website. This will be an ongoing analysis of the quantity of #LOVE tweets compared against their random number generator.
