Deric Carner (b. Arlington, VA, lives in Brooklyn) received an MFA at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, 2005; MA from the University of Plymouth, UK, 2005, and a BFA from the University of California at Santa Cruz, 1998. Recent exhibitions include "Rear Window Treatment" at Louis B James, NYC and "Stay, just for a little while" at Romer Young Gallery, San Francisco. He has exhibited at EFA Project Space, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Centre Pompidou, Spazio A, Participant Inc., Gallery Aferro, Queen's Nails Projects, Southern Exposure, Artist’s Space and CAC Vilnius.

'Eat the Feeling' is an 100 page publication of original artwork created by artist Deric Carner. It presents an in-depth look at his scanner-based collage practice dealing with fashion, art, desire and celebrity. Images are created by cutting, folding, painting and digitally altering photos and studio material. The results are at once tender and raw.
A selection of circular wall prints will be presented during the event. In this series, images of men’s bodies are sliced up, and mixed with bright flowers, butterflies and surgical illustrations.
Publications will be available for purchase at $40. Copies may also be purchased at Dashwood Books, or online at www.mkt.com/dac-studio.

The Artist Welcoming Committee: New York City Branch seeks guests of honor for the second Welcome to New York! celebration, to be held at Art in General the third week in April. This is not a grant or an exhibition opportunity, rather it is a chance for a small batch of artists new to New York City's arts community to be formally welcomed by a room full of local gallerists, curators, arts writers, administrators, and artists. Of course, this will all be done with the help of some bubbly and glitter confetti!

Welcome to New York! is a roving celebration hosted by the Artist Welcoming Committee: New York City Branch. The events will be held a few times a year at various New York City art galleries and institutions to celebrate, welcome, and promote new artists to the city by kick-starting their professional creative networks here.
About:
The Artist Welcoming Committee invites artists who are new to New York City to join local curators, gallery directors, more established artists, and a variety of arts professionals as the guests of honor for a convivial “Hail & Welcome” toast and introduction. A limited number of artists who have recently moved to NYC will be selected by the committee through open call submissions process and review of images of recent work as well as a short written statement to be welcomed as Bright New Prospects in the New York art world.
Selected Artists will be honored with a public reception featuring introductions by guest arts professionals, take-away promotional material, and artists' resource packets. The atmosphere of these events will be festive- although this event is certainly intended as a useful networking opportunity for the new artists, it is above all a celebration and will look and act the part of one!
There will sparkling wine to toast the guests of honor and welcome their arrival to the New York arts community. There will also be a (spiked) punch bowl, snacks, music, confetti, noisemakers, banners and balloons- think over the top surprise birthday party vibe.
Where:
The inaugural Welcome to New York! event will occur on Wednesday, February 23 from 7pm- 9pm in conjunction with the exhibition "I Like the Art World and the Art World Likes Me" curated by Eric Doeringer at EFA Project Space, a program of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts.
Why:
Let’s face it- While New York is a place filled with excitement and opportunity for artists and all alike, it is not always the most welcoming or possible to navigate without “a little help from your friends.” We at the Artist Welcoming Committee want to provide a chance for a few deserving, hard working, and talented new creative transplants to experience our community for what (we hope) it truly is: human and attainable.
