MFA Digital/Experimental Media Program at Kansas State University
http://art.ksu.edu/grad/digital.html

The Digital/Experimental (DX) Media program at Kansas State University is now accepting applications for its MFA in Digital/Experimental Media through January 15th, 2015.

The DX Media program is an interdisciplinary academic and research program dedicated to exploring the intersections of art, science, technology and society and the experimental application of a wide range of media as art.

The MFA program in Digital/Experimental Media emphasizes cultural production that is informed by historical, philosophical and theoretical study. Students are encouraged to draw from areas outside of traditional art domains and encouraged to question and challenge traditional notions of what constitute valid art media, contexts, and approaches. The program encourages an interdisciplinary lens when creating digital and experimental works, allowing students to explore the blurred lines between art, science, culture, and history. Desired focus areas include (but are not limited to): mapping, imaging, information visualization, ecological and biological practice, social and community practice, electronics and physical computing, interactivity, telecommunications, network art, systems art and sound art. As part of Kansas State University's 2025 initiative, the goal of our emerging program is to be a renown center for creativity, research and practice in cutting edge experimental art and technology.

The MFA is a 3 year program of study involving seminars, studio courses, art history courses, and independent study. Student progress is monitored through a series of open faculty reviews and exhibition of works. A final exhibition at either the department's Mark A. Chapman Gallery or another approved location is required. Students are encouraged to take courses outside of the Department of Art as may be appropriate to their research and development.

In addition to guidance in the development of a cohesive, culminating body of work, the program offers mentorship in the instruction of art for students interested in university teaching. Graduate students receive Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) their first year, with 100% tuition waiver and stipend for full-time appointments. GTAs assist a professor and are assigned to teach courses related to their areas as Instructor of Record. K-state MFA students graduate with strong teaching portfolios and samples of student work.

The DX Media program offers a variety programming involving exhibitions, symposia and visiting artists which compliment the MFA program. We are the hosts of the first "prairie LASER", K-State's chapter of the Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous. DX Media graduate students will be important participants in the development and administration of the K-State LASER program.

The DX Media Lab, the program's research unit, is currently in the developmental stages of research initiatives with other academic units across the university which will provide opportunities for students to participate in transdisciplinary collaborations, publish scholarly texts, develop curatorial projects, receive funding and exhibit their work to a national and international audience. The DX Media Lab will serve as a platform for graduate students to emerge as writers, scholars and curators, as well as conceptually and technically adept artists.

The program seeks students with interests and explorations in emerging technologies and critical analyses of the relationship of society, technology, politics and history. Students with undergraduate majors outside of art are welcome as long as evidence of relevant accomplishment and clear direction are provided.

The DX Media program is located in the Department of Art at Kansas State University, a public research institution in Manhattan, KS. With its historic roots as a land grant university, Kansas State University has long been a leader in agriculture-based science and engineering research. Located within the Flint Hills, the largest remaining area of unplowed tallgrass prairie in North America, K-State is also known for its ecological research on the plants and animals of the Great Plains. The work of K-State’s Konza Prairie Biological Research Station and the recently established Nanotechnology Innovation Center (and its research focus on sustainable agriculture-based nanomaterials) are just two examples of the dynamic and innovative academic culture of the university.

EVENT

Proof-of-Process

Dates:
Tue Jun 05, 2012 12:00 - Sun Jun 10, 2012

Location:
Vancouver, Canada

Proof-of-Process

Proof-of-Process is a prototype for a community-based research laboratory. It is composed of hybrid exhibitions, workshops and symposia where participants, along with artist-researchers, can interact and collaborate on the development of science and technology-based artworks and research projects at any stage of development - all within a publicly accessible laboratory set-up in the gallery. We seek to create an atmosphere of collaboration, knowledge sharing and creative dialogue. So please come by to participate, offer suggestions, or simply view the work in its various stages.

We are turning Gallery Gachet into a laboratory for: experimentation, workshops and prototyping of science and technology-based artworks. Sign up for workshops and prototyping sessions or simply drop in to view the work as it unfolds!

Drop by to see or collaborate on: a set of intelligent drums that communicate via electrical stimulation, an interactive display of bioluminescent algae, an electrochemical analog computer, and a luminous 3D display connected to a virtual grove of bamboos.

Proof-of-Process fuses research, a DIY production workshop, educational seminars and a gallery exhibition into a singular event. We strongly encourage local artists, musicians, hackers and other interested parties to participate in the workshops and prototyping sessions. Workshops will be led by one or more of the Proof-of-Process artists-researchers and will include demonstrations, discussions and brainstorming.

When: June 5-10, daily 12-6pm. The final exhibition event will be held on Sat. June 9, from 8-10 pm

Where: Gallery Gachet, 88 E. Cordova, Vancouver, BC

For more information or to register for workshops and production sessions, please visit the Proof-of-Process web site: http://proof-of-process.dprime.org/

Proof-of-Process is a production of DPrime Research, a nonprofit research institution specializing in cultural production informed by the intersection of technology, research and the arts. http://dprime.org

SWITCH, The online New Media Art Journal of the CADRE Laboratory for
New Media at San Jose State University is pleased to announce the
launch of Issue 23: FUNCTION // BORDER // DYSFUNCTION.

After a brief hiatus, the new issue of Switch has emerged. After 2
solid years of work leading up to ISEA2006 and the ZeroOne Festival,
CADRE and SWITCH have been considering new agendas, strategies and
opportunities. Over the last several months, the CADRE Laboratory has
engaged in a diverse set of activities. We have explored issues such
as failure (its lessons and its utility), borders (real/virtual, body/
technology, open/closed), and in what direction "new" media may be
going. Issue 23 highlights the diversity of these activities, which
we have grouped under the rubric of "Function / Border /
Dysfunction". Among other things, we have interviews with Michael
Joaquin Grey, Saskia Sassen and Lu Jie. Cultural theorist/art
historian Dore Bowen explores "The Function of Dysfunction" in her
article on Fluxus event scores. The CADRE Lab introduces its Speaker
Salon Series, it's new artist residency with the Montalvo Arts Center
and it's collaboration with Ars Virtua in sponsoring the Borders
conference in Second Life.

About SWITCH

SWITCH is the new media art journal of the CADRE Laboratory for New
Media of the School of Art and Design at San Jose State University.
It has been published on the Web since 1995. SWITCH is interested in
fostering a critical viewpoint on issues and developments in the
multiple crossovers between art and technology. Its main focus in on
questioning and analyzing, as well as reporting and discussing these
new art forms as they develop, in hopes of encouraging dialogue and
possible collaboration with others who are working and considering
similar issues. SWITCH aims to critically evaluate developments in
art and technology in order to contribute to the formation of
alternative viewpoints with the intention of expanding the arena in
which new art and technology emerge. SWITCH is overseen by CADRE
faculty Joel Slayton and Rachel Beth Egenhoefer.

DISCUSSION

SWITCH: Issue 22

HI everyone. Just wanted to announce the new issue of SWITCH:

SWITCH : The online New Media Art Journal of the CADRE Laboratory for
New Media at San Jose State University

http://switch.sjsu.edu
switch@cadre.sjsu.edu

SWITCH Journal is proud to announce the launch of Issue 22: A Special
Preview Edition to ISEA 2006/ ZeroOne San Jose.

As San Jose State University and the CADRE Laboratory are serving as
the academic host for the ZeroOne San Jose /ISEA 2006 Symposium,
SWITCH has dedicated itself to serving as an official media
correspondent of the Festival and Symposium. SWITCH has focused the
past three issues of publication prior to ZeroOne San Jose/ISEA2006
on publishing content reflecting on the themes of the symposium. Our
editorial staff has interviewed and reported on artists, theorists,
and practitioners interested in the intersections of Art & Technology
as related to the themes of ZeroOne San Jose/ ISEA 2006. While some
of those featured in SWITCH are part of the festival and symposium,
others provide a complimentary perspective.

Issue 22 focuses on the intersections of CADRE and ZeroOne San Jose/
ISEA 2006. Over the past year, students at the CADRE Laboratory for
New Media have been working intensely with artists on two different
residency projects for the festival
