Cara-Ann Simpson (b. 1985) is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on sculpture, sound, space and the participant. Cara-Ann is concerned with modes of listening/hearing in social situations and how people interact with sound. In 2011, Cara-Ann has received an International Program: Cultural Exchange Grant from Arts Victoria to present "Geo Sound Helmets" at Blue Oyster Art Project Space in New Zealand, presented at Subtle Technologies Symposium in Toronto, and will be publishing at ISEA2011 (Istanbul, Turkey) and in the International Journal of Art and Technology with collaborative papers.

In 2010, Cara-Ann received an ArtStart grant from the Australia Council for the Arts to attend the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME2010, Singapore) where she presented a paper with collaborator Eva Cheng (research engineer) on an interactive sound installation. The Janet Holmes á Court Artists’ Grant Scheme supported the development of this installation in 2009, and Cara-Ann was subsequently featured in Real Time Magazine’s online Studio section.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts First Class Honours from the University of Southern Queensland in 2008, and received the University of Southern Queensland Faculty of Art – Visual Arts medal in 2007. Simpson was the recipient of the Hobday and Hingston Bursary from the Queensland Art Gallery in 2007 for being the most promising undergraduate student from a Queensland tertiary art course. Cara-Ann also received the Asia-Pacific Golden Key International Honours Society Visual & Performing Arts Sculpture Award (2008), and was short-listed in the Wilson HTM National Art Prize (2009), and Agendo (2009).

Simpson has had a number of solo exhibitions, sound releases and been involved in numerous performances and group shows within Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates. Cara-Ann is the Electrofringe Co-Directors & Co-Producer (annual electronic arts festival and year-round programming), and is currently working on several collaborative and solo projects in Melbourne, Australia.

Electrofringe Artistic Co-Producer

Electrofringe is looking for a creative, energetic and highly organised individual to work with the current Artistic Co-Producer, Cara-Ann Simpson (http://www.caraannsimpson.com), on the 2012 program and onto 2013. Applicants can be based anywhere in Australia and we particularly encourage applications from candidates from regional Australia.

The Electrofringe festival and year-round program showcases digital, electronic and media arts with a particular emphasis on emergent forms and techniques. Focusing on encouraging interaction between emerging and professional practitioners, Electrofringe aims to create an open environment of exchange and peer-to-peer mentoring. Presenting workshops, panel discussions, installations, exhibitions, screenings and performances, Electrofringe brings together artists, musicians, media makers, technicians, scientists, academics, cultural commentators, critics and enthusiasts working with a broad range of media.

In 2012, Electrofringe will celebrate its 15th year with a change of focus and direction. While celebrating its history, Electrofringe will launch its new direction this year, no longer just an annual festival but as an organisation offering support and opportunities for digital artists Australia-wide.

In 2012, Electrofringe will be taking be taking a break from This is Not Art (TINA) in Newcastle to celebrate its 15th year with a change of focus and a new direction.
While celebrating its diverse history and abundant creative resources, Electrofringe will also explore new avenues in collaboration with both its long-term creative community and potential partners. It will transform from an annual festival to an organisation offering support and opportunities for electronic artists Australia-wide.

Turning Toys into Electronic Instruments

Turning Toys into Electronic Instruments will be run by Nick Wishart (Toydeath) which covers basic electronics for artists and musicians. This workshop is part of the Electrofringe in Townsville events.

The workshop will be followed by improv performance by the participants and screenings of Toydeath performance videos.
Cult circuit bending band Toydeath re-appropriate children’s electronic toys and wear human-sized cartoonish costumes to create a unique stage show.
