The Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University is seeking submissions for a group exhibition curated by Ruth Ballester, Whitney Fehl, and Lauren Thompson. Portraiture: Inside Out seeks to emphasize the methods by which contemporary artists explore private identity of both the self and the other by denying formal and art historical conventions, as well as moving away from lofty social and political tendencies. It is the goal of this exhibition to foster an understanding and appreciation of unconventional approaches to the genre of portraiture, especially within a conceptual framework. All media will be considered, including (but not limited to) painting, drawing, prints, photography, sculpture, installation, new media, performance, and mixed-media works. The exhibition will specifically explore artists that reveal private identity through external physical cues and/or, interior psychological states of being. Performative works, installation and interventions will especially be favored.

CALL FOR ART
Working in Wonder
The Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University is seeking submissions for “Working in Wonder,” a group exhibition. Open to all artists working in any medium. Exhibition dates are January 18 through February 11, 2011. $15/5 entries.
BACKGROUND
Artists are encouraged to submit artwork exploring themes inspired by cabinets of curiosities, kunstkammern and wunderkammern. Order and discovery were important aspects of collection building during the prominent period of the curiosity cabinet (1500-1700). The exhibit will explore these themes in both contemporary and historical frameworks.
“Working in Wonder” will discuss the cabinet and examine its influence on contemporary art. The exhibition will address the co-existence of naturalia and artificialia in the cabinet and in contemporary art. A brief overview of the history of the cabinet will precede the core of the exhibit, which will feature artists who have taken the ideas of the curiosity cabinet and applied them in a more contemporary context.

The Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University is seeking submissions for a group exhibition curated by Jeanne Brasile and Howard Hurst. Open to all artists working with textiles. The exhibition seeks to defy common conceptions surrounding fiber which is traditionally perceived a craft medium. The central issue posed by the curators is how both fine art and craft inform the artistic process of the participating artists, demonstrating that creativity can be informed by approaches which are seemingly at odds. The curators are especially interested in work which stretches the limits of the potential of fiber to present challenging and innovative perspectives. All forms of fiber art will be considered, including (but not limited to); installation, sculpture, needlework, crochet, knitting, embroidery, quilting, knot work, mixed- media, multi-media and sewn works. Medium to large-scale works in a colorful palette are especially sought after.
ELIGIBILITY
All forms of fiber art are eligible. There is a limit of 5 entries per artist. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. All work must be ready for installation or hanging.
$15/5 entries. Full color catalogue.
