NEW YORK - Analogous Projects is pleased to present Digital Intelligence & Analogous Interactions, a group show opening at 5:00 p.m. on June 2nd at Devotion Gallery in Williamsburg, as part of the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC). Works include three committee-selected ICMC AI pieces by Brett Balogh (Chora), Scott Mc Laughlin (Shoals), and Steve Bull + Scot Gresham-Lancaster (Cellphonia), as well as additional complexity-driven works by Nick Lesley (Epic Doom) and Philip Galanter (RGBCA).

The audiovisual installations and performative social activities present evolutionary- and generative-art as a tool for social sculpture and immersive gaming. An ICMC AI concert will take place on May 31st at Issue Project Room as a preface to the exhibition, with committee-selected works by Arne Eigenfeldt (In Equilibrio), Jon Weinel (Entoptic Phenomena), Will Orzo (Giraffe). Together, these ICMC AI events draw inspiration from performative ecologies, musical improvisation, reality-based games, social experiments, neural networks, and swarm-optimization.

Digital Intelligence & Analogous Interactions opens at 5:00 p.m. on June 2nd at Devotion Gallery (54 Maujer Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11206) with a performative social activity by Scott McLaughlin (Shoals). Devotion is a new gallery in Williamsburg focusing on the intersection of art, science, new media, and design. We present cross-disciplinary work that draws from architecture, computation, gaming, biology, fabrication, interface design, open-source communities, cloud computing, sound, science, design, emergence, and complexity. We are always seeking out artists who use new technologies or introduce new paradigms.

Devotion has two co-directors: Phoenix Perry is an artist, musician, and game designer. Marie Evelyn is an artist, curator, and computational biologist. They came together with the distinct purpose of giving the New York arts community a venue that radically re-envisions how art and technology negotiate relationships within our culture. Together, they are fostering a community that generates dialogue between art, technology, and scientific research.

The Devotion Board consists of Margaret Schedel (Ph.D. and Professor of Sound Art at SUNY), Brian Jackson (philosopher, educator, and electronic musician), and David Last (musician and artist). Phillip Stearns (circuit bender, hacker, gardener, and new media artist) is the current Gallery Assistant.

Devotion Gallery publicly opened at 54 Maujer Street in Williamsburg (Brooklyn, NY) on Halloween, 2009.

NEW YORK - Analogous Projects and Issue Project Room present three selected submissions exploring the intersection of computer music and emergent phenomena, as part of the International Computer Music Conference 2010. Drawing inspiration from performative ecologies, musical improvisation, reality-based games, biomedical hacking, and chaordic systems, each nondeterministic work will be performed live following a short conceptual introduction by the composer:

In Equilibrio (Arne Eigenfeldt) is a realtime generative composition for either Disklavier or sampled piano, created by Kinetic Engine, a multiagent software designed by the composer. Responding to control over density, the first set of six agents interact to create an evolutionary rhythmic structure, communicating amongst themselves and altering their patterns in an effort to balance their own goals with those of the other agents. Rhythmic events are passed to a second set of six agents, which assign specific pitches: these decisions are mediated by their own desire to explore their environments, while balancing the ensemble goal of an artificial harmonic balance.

Entoptic Phenomena (Jon Weinel) is one of several works which utilise The Atomizer, a specially designed live electronics patch for laptop which facilitates the improvisational production of streams of Sonic Atoms. Sonic Atoms are a concept created by the artist La Peste for his flashcore music, and are considered as a means through which to explore complexity through micro rhythmic pulses.

Giraffe (Will Orzo) is centered on a program which, in real-time, generates unique and audible solutions to a problem of post-tonal music theory and composition: How can one traverse pitch-class space in the most musically meaningful way? Giraffe (written in Pure Data) generates emergence via the interaction of rule-based agents, to produce a harmonically rich four-part texture. Agents detect several quantified musical features in the context of predetermined thresholds, and fire in response to critical values. Using this neural-like algorithm, Giraffe addresses the issue of creating musical coherence through emergence, thereby navigating the tetrachords in an aesthetically compelling manner. This performance of Giraffe illustrates the concept of integrative levels, by building upon the emergence already inherent in the program itself: A group of improvising musicians interact with Giraffe for the first time, before a live audience.

NEW YORK - Analogous Projects is pleased to present ScrapCycle(reUSE/reCOMBINE), a group show opening at 7:00 p.m. on May 7th at Devotion Gallery in Williamsburg, with works by Aricoco (Ari Tabei), Katherine Liberovskaya + o.blaat (Keiko Uenishi), LoVid (Kyle Lapidus + Tali Hinkis), Philip Galanter, Phillip Stearns, Pollie Barden, Ranjit Bhatnagar, Torino:Margolis (Jenny Torino + Ben Margolis).

ScrapCycle is an ongoing project devoted to the creative reuse of refuse. This annual one-night event has been reinterpreted as a group exhibition, ScrapCycle(reUSE/reCOMBINE). In addition to featuring upcycled artworks and performances, workshops will take place throughout the month in order to underscore the participatory nature of the ScrapCycle series.

All events require a piece of refuse for reuse as the price of admission. Materials are used for on-site installations, directed toward local upcycling artists, or repurposed as holiday gift wrap. These action-based economic and environmental aspects of ScrapCycle refer to the act of reuse as requiring us to approach everyday decisions from a use-value perspective, which is in opposition to our collective exchange-value upbringing.

ScrapCycle places an exchange-value on upcycled and reused materials, in order to probe the environmental effects of economic perspective. By presenting concrete implementations of reuse and recombination, ScrapCycle(reUSE/reCOMBINE) serves to liken the small pervasive effects of social sculpture, environmental activism, and economic perspective to a fine-tuning of interdependent parameters with global results. The exhibition references complexity science as it relates to political economy, ecology, and methods of reuse and recombination (i.e., small-world networks, social systems theory, ecological systems theory, evolutionary computation, genetic algorithms, neural networking).

ScrapCycle(reUSE/reCOMBINE) opens at 7:00 p.m. on May 7th at Devotion Gallery (54 Maujer Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11206) with performances by Bora Yoon, Ranjit Bhatnagar and the Glass Bees, and Tom Vanderwall. Admission is a used water bottle for reuse, and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Analogous invites proposals for presentation at Analogous Interactions events for the International Computer Music Conference, taking place in New York City in June 2010.  Works should explore the intersection of computer music and emergent phenomena -- including, but not limited to, generative sound- and video-works, performative ecologies and installations, live-coding and musical improvisation, reality-based games and social experiments, biomedical hacking and new technology, artificial intelligence and chaordic systems.  Works should be "nondeterministic", having an unpredictable and/or live element, and should be appropriate for a performance, an installation, or a social event.  (Both works-in-progress and finished works will be considered.)

Visit http://music.oc.cct.lsu.edu/author/submit.php to submit work for ICMC 2010.  Applicants may submit more than one work, however, a separate proposal must be made for each.  Select Analogous Interactions for AI-related works.  The deadline for submissions is December 31st, 2009.

NORWAY  --  Analogous Projects is excited to announce the participation of Torino:Margolis's Action Potential in PikselFest09!  Action Potential is a new media work giving voice to human free will, and will be presented as a work-in-progress at PikselFest09 on November 19th.

Volitional movement is produced as a result of conscious choice.  For this Interaction Art Incubator project, biomedical artists Torino:Margolis -- together with sound-artist/programmer Lee Azzarello and choreographer/dancer Dana Kotler -- will detect this expression of free will and transform it into sound.
