Artist Statement
Social Media is an online world of outlets and portals connecting individuals to one another - But, does it really connect us as a whole? Each online platform maintains controls that make up a digital language. The hashtag was put into place to filter the social users similar interest within a post. These hashtags however, are limiting, and they do not actually join every single user together. The social media platforms are in fact limiting - someone from one country, who speaks a certain language may never come in contact with another user outside their native language. Languages are never translated through hashtags - as hashtags only match the exact letters within. As we explore hashtags, we are digging into the lives of others. Are they similar to us, or completely different? Do our internet languages reflect our public personas, outside of the digital realm?
Aside from hashtags, I will examine the act of scrolling - we have the capability to explore people of whom we know, and may not know. Is the act of doing so held private and okay behavior? Or, is it deviant depending on the situation?
As internet users, we will continue to seek the ultimate online experience, and in doing so, we must be aware of how we interact with the interfaces. Though we may feel connected to the universe (world) we are held to certain restraints to reaching ultimate connectivity.
