FUTURE MAPPERS

Dates:
Sat Jul 18, 2015 13:00 - Sat Jul 18, 2015

SATURDAY, JULY 18TH, 1PM – 6PM

Future Mappers is a 5 hour projection mapping workshop where students will learn basic knowledge about projection mapping technology.

This technology can turn almost any surface into a dynamic video display. Specialized software, MadMapper, is used to warp and blend projected images so they fit perfectly on irregularly-shaped “screens”. These projections then become independent organisms, expressing characters through their designated language: that of space, light, form, and sound.

Our exercise during the workshop will be choosing the right projector, recognizing how the video content relates to the shape of the surface, and projecting the video onto a simple 2 or 3 dimensional surface with MadMapper 2.0’s new features and video content created in Modul8.

DURING THE 5 HOURS YOU WILL LEARN

Basic knowledge of choosing the right projector for a project.
Learn how to make animations and video content using Modul8.
Learn how to map 2 or 3 dimensional surfaces using MadMapper 2.0 Beta with new features; Multiple inputs, miniMAD export for installation without a computer, 3D surfaces and generate lines.
Introducing a miniMAD. No more Mac computer for a installation.

PREREQUISITES & PREPARATION

This workshop is made for beginners. No pre-knowledge of video art is required.
Modul8 and MadMapper only work for Mac computers. Participants should bring their own Mac laptops. A MacBook Air is not recommended. 16 gig of RAM is recommended.
A free 30-day full access of Modul8 and MadMapper will be provided before the workshop.

CHiKA started as a live visual artist and VJ working with experimental sound composers, 8-bit musicians and club DJs almost a decade ago. She explored her work as an art practice, experimenting with improvisational communication with an audience in real time. Now, she employs evolving technology to bring dynamic interaction of the digital and physical world to the public. Working across a variety of media, including LED, video projection and interactive technologies, CHiKA transforms the energy of a live performance environment by provoking public consciousness and awakening public awareness through interactive installations. She has been a resident fellow at the NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program, an IAC/InterActiveCorp Teaching and Research Fellow for Vimeo, an Eyebeam resident artist and is a BRIC Media Arts Fellow and Artist in Residence at Media Center in 2015.

Momento/Memento

Dates:
Fri Jun 19, 2015 19:00 - Sat Jul 11, 2015

Location:
Brooklyn, New York
United States of America

OPENING FRIDAY, JUNE 19TH, 7 – 9PM, REVERSE will present, for the first time in New York, four Cincinnati-based artists working on the objectification of time and memory.

Consciousness is endlessly grasping for objects as moment boxes. Yet there is an important etymological distinction between our contemporary understanding of memento (commonly misspelled momento)—a French souvenir, which can take the form of anything from a cheap snow globe to an interesting rock—and memento mori, which symbolized the medieval practice of reflecting on mortality and the transient nature of the universe. It is in the gap between these two definitions of the same term that the exhibition MOMENTO / MEMENTO operates, as Joe Hedges, Jacob Lynn, Corrina Mehiel, and Christy Wittmer work to acknowledge an objectified attachment to moments in time.

While MOMENTO / MEMENTO features four Cincinnati, Ohio-based artists, the themes are universal; Hedges’ digital paintings present ambiguous artifacts of science and technology; Lynn’s embroidered works explore family history and sexuality; Mehiel’s photos document the performative nature of identity; and Wittmer’s formal ceramic structures waver elegantly between austere and ornate. The contemporary mementos (in the form of art-objects) in the exhibition, like mementos of history, function across dimensions of time and culture.
