The Department of Design seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor of Design with expertise in the aesthetic, technical, and theoretical practice of animation and its application in the development and use of various forms of time-based and interactive media. We seek an animation designer to join a collegial and diverse faculty to instruct undergraduate and graduate courses in visualization strategies for storytelling using time-based media from beginning through advanced levels of animation production. Applicants’ research and teaching should reflect the use of animation to discover, explore, conceptualize, and visualize using contemporary conventions and experimentation with emerging technologies and applications. The exploration of animation in a variety of formats such as film, interactive media, and games will be supported and encouraged.

The successful applicant will advise graduate students in the Department of Design’s M.F.A. program (especially those in the Digital Animation and Interactive Media track) and will contribute to the development of new learning opportunities for undergraduate students in Design (Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Visual Communication Design). This new faculty member will also have the opportunity to contribute to the beginning through the advanced levels of the anticipated interdisciplinary Moving Image Production major, working with faculty members from a range of departments and areas of expertise in various modes of filmmaking to support this exciting new major.

This faculty member will also contribute to the community of creative researchers and benefit from the facilities and equipment of the world-class Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (see accad.osu.edu for more information). This collaborative think space hosts experimental and collaborative projects and the successful applicant should excel at participating as a member of collaborative cross-disciplinary teams.

Qualifications:

An M.F.A. degree or equivalent with demonstrated specialization in animation and a record of creative research in the field of animation is required. Teaching experience and/or professional practice in the field of animation is desired. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.

We seek an animation designer to join a collegial and diverse faculty for the instruction of undergraduate and graduate courses in visualization strategies for storytelling in time-based media at beginning and advanced levels of animation production. Applicants with knowledge of theory and the process of working with animation to explore areas that include social change and activism, scientific and data-driven information visualization, interactivity, games and gamification, mobile apps, social media, or other contemporary and emerging applications for animation practice and research are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will advise graduate students in the Design Department’s M.F.A. program (especially those in the Digital Animation and Interactive Media track) and will contribute to the development of new learning opportunities to advance undergraduate design students’ ability to integrate contemporary modes of communicating creative ideas into their design practices using a variety of dynamic motion-graphic and time-based approaches and techniques.

The research area associated with this position will be supported by the community of creative researchers (including faculty, students and support staff), facilities and equipment of the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (see accad.osu.edu for more information). This collaborative think space has an established history of hosting experimental and collaborative projects that involve the development of cross-disciplinary methods of visualizing and animating complex subjects and concepts. The successful applicant should excel at participating as a member of collaborative cross-disciplinary teams that benefit from the exploration of the applicability of animation and interactive media as research tools and modes of communication and expression.

An M.F.A. degree or equivalent with demonstrated specialization in animation or the development and use of interactive media. Teaching experience and an established record of research in the field of animation is preferred.
Professional practice in the field of animation is preferred.
