Our Mission is...
To address the needs of contemporary artists and creatives by providing an affordable, high-end, multi-disciplinary, open source facility where creative professionals can pursue their careers and projects while building a lasting art community in Brooklyn.
Our Story
Founders Jason Goodman and Jeremy Lovitt moved to New York City in 2004. They were immediately faced with the limitations of being a working artist; either you work at home and don't have the space and tools you need, or you sacrifice creative freedom and work for someone else.
Their solution: 3rd Ward. In September 2005, they took over this 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse space in the third ward of Brooklyn. Friends and local artists put their blood, sweat and a whole lotta love into getting the facility open by May of 2006.
Today
3rd Ward is a member-based artists' co-op. Our facility houses two gorgeous photo studios, a professional wood and metal shop, a fully loaded digital media lab, an art gallery, shared office space and a multi-disciplinary continuing art education program. It can be used for private rentals, on a per-project basis, for group work, and more.
On a typical day, there is: a fashion shoot in the photo studio; a few people from the neighborhood are checking out our latest gallery show; our media lab is full of people using the design and editing software; the wood & metal shops are crawling with artisans working on sets for plays, building furniture, creating sculptures, and designing jewelry; and our offices are lined with designers and creative professionals working on different projects. Everyday is a whirlwind of creative people and energy!
3rd Ward proves that you don't have to spend a lot of money to have the best resources and equipment at your fingertips.
